Looking for the shortest barrel bolt action large caliber hunting rifle.

A Steyr Big Bore 450 Marlin is a pretty punchy and accurate due to the great Mannlicher bolt action SBS with a 22 inch barrel... JP.

One of these might fill the bill . . .

C-FBMI's Merkle .470

My M-70 .458 with a 21" barrel

Mark Sullivan's John Wilkes .500 NE

A pal's .375 Ruger Alasakan and my custom Brno 602 .375 Ultra, both 20"

Okay, the doubles aren't bolt guns, but they are short and of reasonably large caliber.

Myself I have a 44mag Rossi Ranch Hand with a full but stock that I had to fit onto the mares leg
I know of prospectors who have taken in there Marlin guide rifles and had a 14 inch barrel installed on their rifles talk about a handy little ring to pack in the bush
The One of the companies on here that sells custom barrels will make you A rifle barrel fore you
You cannot legally cut down a barrel down below 18 1/2 inches but it is legal to have a manufacture custom make a shorter barrel for you as long as the rifles overall is over 26"
I have a AIA Enfield 7.62x39 that I want to have a 12 " barrel made fore it its not a big bore rifle but it is pretty damn cool regardless

Bowie: Now that is something I have been ignorant about! There are bolt guns with barrels < 18.5" that are NR?

The only restriction for 18" is if the barrel is being cut after manufacture... the OEM can make barrels shorter as long as the OAL meets the minimum requirement... there are many examples of shorter centerfire barrels... look at the Mare's Leg in a lever or the Ruger Compact in a bolt.

I just bought and haven't picked up yet(ouch) a savage brush hunter in 338 Win Mag. 20" brushed stainless barrel, synthetic stock and open sites. Can't wait to shoot it at the range.
