Hot Loads - 7mm WSM/IMR7828/168 gr Nosler Custom Competition Bullet

Using 65gr of IMR 7828 with 168 gr Nosler CC bullet. Hard extraction, primers popping out, bolt face impression on the case head, etc....

Nosler manual has for the 160 gr bullet 67 gr as max load and 66.5 gr max load for the 175 gr bullet.

Any ideas?

Yes, you are running about 80,000 psi. Knock your powder back by 10% and work back up.

For your rifle yes. It was probably fine in their test barrel

BTW, Hodgdon shows a maximum of 61.5 grains 7828 under a 160 grain Partition.

Well, this 65.0 gr load I have is not working out. First time I have run into this problem on a new rifle. Quick load says it's ok too.

Simply too hot for your particular rifle.
I would back off at least 5 grains and work up carefully.

YUP it don't matter what any book now says or anyone - the load is to HOT for your rifle Back it down - what did you start with and how did you work up to the load your using now ? RJ

Exactly, thats why they list starting loads and max loads. Even though all chanbers are cut to SAMMI spec.(or supposed to be) there are many other variables that can change chamber pressures.

Given that you have blown primers, you were close to receiving a face full of gas and debris. By pure luck, you only ruined some brass.

Nobody has suggested that your scale may be off. If you are using a balance scale have you calibrated it lately, or if its a cheap digital I would suggest something else. Where you metering out each load carefully, or using a powder thrower?
