You guys do realize that the case does not hold pressure, but the chamber walls do.

Bulged case like that does imply the chamber isn't doing it's job and it's pressure holding properties seem to be compromised.

Rather than risk an accident , it might be wise to purchase another SVT 40 as there are lots around at good prices.....and keep the one you have for a parts just in case you ever need parts in the future . The endless supply of these Russian Surplus rifles are bound to dry up in time , it might be good to have a parts rifle...

Well, thanks for the help. I think I will hang on to the gun for now until i travel back to the city where i bought it. In the meantime, I guess it's off to EE for another one.
