Electronic Moose Calls

Moose are so easy to call that electronic callers, though I have never seen them, are not necessary.

Bush 1, my neighbour is a CO, says they are fine. Only electronic calls for turkeys and migratory birds are illegal. Some of the units I was looking at have remote wireless speakers that you can position quite a distance from your position. I can see a nice advantage to this for setting up shots.

From another forum, a response from MNR to the question:

"As per Ontario Regulation 665/98 of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act;

34.1 (3) A person shall not hunt wild turkey,
(a) using a live decoy;
(b) using an electronic call; or
(c) within 400 metres of any place where bait has been deposited unless the place has been free of bait for at least seven days. O. Reg. 144/08, s. 5.

This is the only reference to the use of electronic callers in the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and the associated Ontario Regulations. Therefore, the use of electronic callers for hunting moose, deer, bear and small game is legal in Ontario.

There is a regulation under the Migratory Game Bird Regulations (federal law) prohibiting the use of electronic callers for hunting migratory birds such as geese and ducks.

So, anyone have any experience with them?

I have a Mini Phantom, and have used it for a number of years without success. I should also mention that I have in the past year received a birch bark call as a gift, and have used it this past season with great success! Needless to say the E-caller will be staying at home from now on, at least when it comes to moose hunting. IMHO, the E-calls are to generic, with a birch bark you can vary your calls and they sound realistic. With lots of practice of course! ;)

I have used the fox pro fury 2 ll for moose in sask as they are allowed to be used here and they do work. I used it this fall in the farm area in winds 40km gusting to 60km and saw moose come from more than 3/4mile at a run(really surprised me). you can get a few different calls if you purchase from there call list or you call make your own and download it the call.

Calling moose is quite easy with a little practice... And you can be more diverse and intimately involved in the process, by using your own voice... Plus not having to haul around all that electronic crap... Get or make a birchbark horn and listen to some moose calling online and instruction from experienced callers... I believe that you will be more satisified with the overall experience.

I agree with this 100%. Moose calling isn't hard...just give it a try and be patient, your voice will work great and you don't have to worry about the batteries going dead.

The batteries cant die, but if your not calling from your diaphragm, your voice can die... I had this problem my first year moose hunting 40 years ago... I was calling with my throat and lost my voice for three days... my dad didn't mind... says it was his most enjoyable hunt... ;)

It is legal to use electronic calls for moose in Newfoundland. I prefer my FoxPro Hellfire, but almost any quality FoxPro will work. With our high winds and broken terrain, the louder callers generally work better, i.e., Hellfire, Shockwave, Praire Blaster, etc...

I have used electronic calls of all kinds and they work. I have also used tape recorded calls such as the one with the water sounds and they have also worked. I agree that a speaker a distance away from you might be an advantage especially if archery hunting but I find two people, one calling and one hunting, works the best.
