XCR at SHOT 2014 - Keymod XCR, 9.5" XCR-M

Regarding the short barrel for a regular xcr, wolverine has intentionally not brought in sbr style in this form factor to avoid losing the non-restricted classification. So, unfortunately, that means 2 rifles or having to choose.
That is not true. Bringing in a regular xcr with a shorter barrel would not change the classification. It would make that rifle restricted due to the barrel length. But every other xcr coming in will remain non restricted if it has an 18.5 inch barrel.

I don't understand the POU of a 7.62x51 SBR???

Not to refute what's been said here reference the ability of Wolverine to "Special Order" barrels and the like from RobArm, but I was under the definite impression Wolverine WILL NOT entertain any requests to import the shorter barrels in order to not jeopardize the non-restricted status of the XCR. I contacted Wolverine on this topic, and was told as much (also mention the possibility of the lighter profile barrel becoming available this year).

I know people will say the other rifles, like the ACR, have non-res/res barrels cohabitate, but i'm just repeating what I've heard. Things might have changed in the past couple of months... I don't know.

This was posted in another thread and somewhere along the way I have seen a post directly from wolverine on this as well. I do wish our firearms laws weren't arbitrary and subject to inconsistent interpretation by bureaucrats... but there we are.

I just happened to be at the RobArms booth when the Keymod designer, Eric Kincel, came by to talk to Alex.
I had only recently learned of Keymod, and didnt know Eric at all.
He said that he does not want to keep it proprietary but wants it to be available to all.

I like the look of the system and the reduced weight and bulk compared to a Pic rail.
I always thought a full quad rail was a goofy poser thing. However, I could easily love a quad of the Keymod variety.

Thanks for the info about the short barrels, much appreciated. I was under the impression it could be done after reading up about the BRS-99 which you can get as either R or NR, but perhaps I am mistaken.

I'm interested in the new bolt, does it require a new bolt carrier too?

I just got a reply from RA

I wanted to inquire about the new bolt design mentioned at shot show. Is it a plug and play set up? I did some machining work to my upper and I don’t want to replace it. Someone said that there might need to be something done to the lower? if so what? I unfortunately am on slightly above dial up speeds for another week or two (ya it still exists that slow) so watching the shot show video is a no go; but is there anything else upgraded other then the Key mod? If there are any substantial improvements to the lower I might consider just replacing it with a new one, over modifying the old one to work.

the number on my frame is XL08206

thank you for your time!

Chris,
To upgrade to the new internal parts, a larger clearance hole in the back of the receiver is necessary. We will make a public pattern so a gunsmith will be able to drill it out.

Thanks,

A large clearance hole you say? Hmmm something I can probably do at work. I hate the idea of sending my lower away (call me paranoid.)

I'm going to go ahead and assume the hole will be cut where the current "rubber buffer pad" is and the bolt carrier will now ride back into the lower reciever while cycling.

My question now is, what stops the action at its furthest point now? Will the operating spring and spring guide be "bottomed out"? Obviously I'm way ahead of myself but I'm very curious. Must be my type-a personality

Here is the link. Turns out they will sell you a restricted xcr with a short barrel and then you can buy a long barrel and have it recertified as NR, but not vice versa so my above post is not quite accurate. Bottom line, they won't sell you a factory barrel less than 18.5 for your existing NR xcr.

Apparently the shortest barrel that will fit inside a normal Xcr is 16".
I don't think I can justify spending $500 just for 2.5" and being restricted.

well I milled mine off to slim it down.....not shave weight

Another benefit is it slimmer, Alex Robinson stated that the key mod takes .45 lbs off of an XCR-l I would assume that the XCR-m would lose a slight bit more weight with the same set up.

Pair the key mod upper with a light barrel and it would make a decent hunting rifle.

Ya but I believe the gas block or what ever its called won't be in the correct position with the smaller barrels.

To my knowledge the gas port in the barrel is the same in all standard configurations to align the gas block to the upper in the same place no matter what the length. So long as we're talking "standard" barrels here and not something made for the mini or micro.

XCR-L STANDARD (the one we all have NR) 5.56 1:7 is offered in 16", 14.7", 18.6", 12", 11"; it says all are offered in light or heavy too.

This is directly from the Canadian importer of XCR:

This at best is a very grey area. The real problem is that the CFC are unable to register any firearm with more than one barrel, the problem arises when the “spare” barrel is a different caliber or length. Under the old RWS system multi caliber (barrel) guns were registered with the Certs labelled 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 and so on. The CFC gave me the run around when the long gun registry was in effect with a combo three barrel rifle shotgun set up. All three barrels were different, they were unable to register her correctly. The problem is compounded when by changing the barrel the class is also changed.

In the case of the XCR rifles we were advised that if barrels under 18.5 inches were sold then the easiest solution would be to classify all XCR as restricted regardless of barrel lengths. Scare tactics maybe, but after what we have experienced this year I believe as an importer and distributor that there are times when we should show due diligence and act with a degree of caution.

We will certainly sell you a short barreled (under 18.5 inches) XCR as a restricted firearm, you can also then purchase a longer barrel, if you then swap barrels and change the registration that is up to you. We feel this way we acting as a responsible importer.

Only the 16 inch barrel shares the same gas system as the 18.6 inch barrel. We can supply light 18.6 inch barrels so the difference is slight. Shorter barrels will require complete top half.

This is all further complicated as barrels are generally not controlled items. If you cut down a rifle or shotgun barrel to less that 18 inches you make it prohibited and handgun barrels under 105 mm are also prohibited, but otherwise there are no controls.

I trust this clarifies the situation.
