hey im new to gun nuts and just picked up a Winchester 490 i was looking for a .22 and picked this up in mint shape for $260 with 5 mags ....don't know anything about the gun and was wondering if anyone on here owns one or has any ifo on these guns

thx -clayton

I have 2 of them. best semi i have shot. heavy feel like a rifle and eats everything i feed it. even at 200 yards it seems like a center fire gun. Keep the action clean and it will never fail you. I got mine for $200 each c/w mags ( 6 10 shot and 6 5 shot combined) and scopes. Both like showroom condition. Congrats...they are rather rare up here as they were produced for the US market.

ya i really like the feel of them well built and soild ......do you have any tips on how to clean it (my first gun ) im kinda clue less and want to make sure i do it right

Mine has been good. Not the most accurate rifle on the plannet but it is very reliable.

As for cleaning? You'll have to take the gun down which is pretty intuitive but having the manual the for the first time definetly doesn't hurt. Take it easy on the lube and she'll be good. I run my dry.

Great rifle. Ive had 3 of them and all were great shooters and functioned flawlessly. Looks like you got a pretty good deal coming with 5 mags. Check to see if there is a * with the serial number or inside the receiver with the bolt pulled back. Some of these would go full auto. The * was used to indicate it had been sent back to the factory to be corrected. Only one of the three I owned didnt have the *.

Scott....

light oil in action if storing ...and wipe out clean when taking it out to shoot it. Like most semis, the residue that gets into the action when it cycles, is attracted to oil and soon gums everything up. so about every 500-1000 shells, i clean thoroughly and run 'em dry. both ine have been back to factory for the recall.

I also just purchased one a few months ago. Wonderful little rifle. A little research garnered the general notion that those who have them really like the 490. Mine was horribly dirty inside. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years and was jamming on me. I took it apart carefully - you might want to get someone to help you if you are new as they are a bit complicated - and cleaned it extremely well. No jamming since. I have also read these guns prefer better quality ammo. I haven't tested that yet, but it wouldn't surprise me. You've got yourself a nice old gun. Enjoy.

I think you have this backwards, they were made in Canada and there are very few in the USA. I have had a few of them over the years and they are a very under rated semi auto 22.

thanks everyone for the help im going to take it to a gunsmith and he said he would show me how to properly break it down and clean it .....and i will let ya know on how it shoots heard nothing but good things about this gun now i want to find out

I have one and it a beautiful working rifle, mine likes to be cleaned regularly and works best with CCI ammo.you know its due for a cleaning when the bolt won't stay open anymore.

I bought my 490 Winchester used back in the 80's, its been a excellent rifle, its a heavy rifle, steel receiver, walnut stock, probably got one of the nicest smooth trigger pull, i found that shooting Remington Yellow Jacket, did gum up the action, switched to CCI ammo that helped alot
Here is a link for the Winchester 490 manual, its price is $7.75, plus 1.25 shipping = $9.00 UShttp://rediscovered-shooting-treasures.com

Parts for the 490 rifle are available either from Numrich Gun Parts, or i have had good luck with Western Gun Parts in Edmonton,

By Googleing 490 Winchester there is info on the internet on stripping and assembling the 490, hope this helps

There's nothing tricky about disassembling or reassembling the 490. It's basically a gussied up Cooey 64. Check out a Winchester 77 if you want finicky.

Wrench, flat screwdriver, Philips screwdriver. That's all for tools. Once the barrel/receiver attaching bracket is out, pull the barrel straight out. Once the trigger group is out, slide the bolt forward, pull out the handle, and finish pulling the bolt all the way out. Dead easy. No need to go to a gunsmith.

Accuracy Plus has 2 of these for sale on their web site today.
Ouch! 399$!! Even in excellent condition its way to expensive!
Had a 190 a while ago. Liked it very much but trigger was the worst i ever experience. If im not mistaking, both 190s and 490s have the same trigger group.

You got a good buy at $260.00, the mags alone are $20/each, i saw several Winchester 490's last year, at gunshows here in Alberta, and were priced in the $300 and up

YOUCH is right. both 490s at Accurate are way too much. one at 299 and the other 399. Both 490s listed at Accuracy have rust and colour loss. Under $200 may be okay. like new c/w scope and a couple mags would be worth $250-300 in my opinion.

i agree the prices are too high. In mint condition blue book is only $300 and drops quickly as condition goes down.

I have 2 model 190's, 1 x model 290 and had a 490. I have shot
at least 20k rounds in the 190's with no issues. I have loved these since
I first saw them. Easily over 350 grouse/ptarmigan with them and
at least 40 rabbits. I keep a can of rem oil spray in my truck and knapsack
to keep it running if she gets a bit gummy in the field. Love them.
One of my
190's shoots short/long/and long rifle. But the other 2 are marked .22lr only. Since I cant
Remember , does the 490 shoot shorts too???? How is the barrel marked???
What changed internally to allow interchanging of ammo?? I can mix up short and long in one of
my 190's with no stoppages. I love shooting shorts. I never tried with the second 190 because
it is purposefully marked .22lr only. Didnt want to wreck it.
