Just Another First Rifle Post - Savage FCP-SR

Hey guys, after months of reading, saving and waiting I finally got my first precision rifle completed this evening. After a ton of reading on here and other places I think I've built up a pretty decent rig to get started on without totally breaking the bank. I got the rifle used in August as a Savage demo with less than 100 rounds through it in perfect condition, which I totally lucked out on finding. The brake was slightly used and so is the scope and I'm really glad I could save some coin on them as well. Let me know what you think!

Here's the specs:

Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 SFP
Vortex Precision Matched Rings low height
Vortex Bubble Level
Savage FCP-K Muzzle Brake
TacPro Cheek Rest
Atlas BT-10 Bipod with throw lever mount
Atlas BT-34 Rail

I have a bunch of 175gr SMK's on order so I'm very excited to start some load development and see how this thing does! It'll definitely be a learning curve shooting at extended distances, and I'm just getting started but it's something I'm really looking forward to.

aye! nice set up ! Can you give a link where to get that break from ? Also I dig the cheek riser, how hard to install ?

Mine currently, 120 down range with it. Sighted it in a 100, made a few one inch groups with cheap 180 gr hunting rounds. Then banged a few out at 800.

Thanks! I got the brake off a fellow CGN'er, I just made a WTB ad and it didn't take long to find one. The cheek rest is really nice, much easier to get a comfortable, steady cheek weld. It took about 30 minutes total to install with taking my time to get it right.

I've had the gun out twice when I first got the scope earlier this month and I was shooting cheapo FMJ's I load for my M305 and it shot pretty decent, but I can't wait to see what the SMK's do. Sounds like yours is working well for you!

Yea its awesome ! I will have to try the WTB add for the break or if anyone else cares to chime in where to get one or any other good breaks it would be appreciated. I Think I will definitely have to look into that cheek riser.

What does your weight come in for all that jazz?

What do you think of the camo ? Everything is brown black and green here in southern ON, I was thinking about painting the stock.
 
Congrats on a beautiful rifle. Can you tell me about the magazines? Are they proprietary, single or double stack, centerfeed or stagger feed, and what the oal is on the magazine?

Plus what are your impressions of function, fit and finish?
 
Magazines are a tricky thing. I believe I have found something very interesting about them that I don't wanna discuss on here until I can get some and actually verify my findings. I will say this though. Have a look at Ruger and the Ruger scout rifle ;)
 
Also I was gonna do it, but when are we making a sticky thread for this rifle? These threads pop-up like every week now(I'm not complaining, I have this rifle and the thing is freaking awesome). It just seems like since everyone is posting about it, it would be a good candidate - no?

They are a lot more popular now. I picked up one of the first ones to hit Canadian Shores and back then there were only two on CGN it seemed like. Now they are everywhere :D

Yeah try a WTB ad, the factory Savage brake is perfect. It's small and clean looking and the bonus is that the finish matches my barrel perfectly. The 308 doesn't really need a brake so it was more for looks anyways haha. The cheek riser is awesome, plus it's made in Canada which I really like. I got mine from Coretac.

Fully loaded it weighs in at 12.6lbs on my bathroom scale, not the heaviest but I still wouldn't want to be hauling it too far.

The camo is alright, it looks cool but it's coming off under the stock where the rear bag goes but I don't think many finishes will stand up under there on a bag. Once its started to wear away in other areas I'll probably Duracoat or Cerakote it flat black.

Thanks a lot! The rifle comes with an Accurate-Mag bottom metal which uses standard Accuracy International magazines. You can buy them from either Accurate-Mag or AI in either 10 or 5 round capacities. They are single stack center feed but I'm unsure of their oal.

Function and finish are great, the only thing that isn't the best is they are a little bit loose fitting. It doesn't affect how they feed, it just rattles a bit if you pick up the gun. There is a guy online selling a machined spacer to take up the slack if it really bothers you. I can say though that it sure is handy having the 10 round capacity.

Yeah it seems like everyone's getting one these days haha a dedicated FCP-SR thread might not be a bad idea.

Yeah that's true, when it's full it doesn't rattle on mine either. Oh the finish seems good, I just wouldn't expect much to stand up to the abuse of a bag under the stock. I should have worded my post a bit differently. I like the camo and I'm only using the gun to hunt steel so I'm not too worried about it standing out. I'll stick with it until it eventually does wear off, which I think will take a while.

Try 43 ish grains of Varget ...... with 175 gr SMK's

I'm getting really good groups at 100 m with that load. Mind you my rifle (Savage 10 FCP HS-Precision) for sure shoots better than me. :(

I've heard nothing but good things about the 175gr SMK's, especially when shooting past 600yds. I'd love to hit 1000 this summer and I'm sure the gun and ammo can do it, it's just up to me haha

I'm loading with IMR4895 which I've also heard great things about under the 175 SMK's. I got lots of it and it's always grouped good in my other rifles so I'll give it a shot.
