Handgun ranges in Toronto

I live in downtown Toronto though and am looking for suggestions for where I could go to shoot.

You poor bastard. You have my sympathy, you are trying to be a gun owner in the most hostile anti-gun area in the entire country.

The TRC does NOT have ridiculous rules, just correct procedures to keep idiots away.

You Ontario shooters that are puckered up to the CFO's behind kill me. You do realize that the rest of the country gets by just fine without all your bullsh!t rules, right?

If I lived in Toronto (perish the thought) I'm not sure I'd shoot, there are so many pointless regulations thought up by people intent on treating other shooters - especially new shooters - like they can't be trusted, it's sick.

I agree. Of course, there is no force in the world powerful enough to convince me to live anywhere near Toronto in the first place. I can smell Calgary from here and that is far too close for my taste. I am counting the days before I can move much farther away from the city and all of its various problems.

Makes perfect sense to make sure new members are safe and trained before setting them loose.

So how come the rest of the country doesn't do this and our ranges are just as safe as the Ontario ranges?

Lots of exaggeration there. You don't have a 10 round mag restriction? You can shoot IPSC without a black badge? There's no probation for guests here. Makes perfect sense to make sure new members are safe and trained before setting them loose.

Oh, I'm sorry - was your club responsible for the Firearms Act? Did your club incorporate IPSC? - yeah. Would you allow a guest, on a day pass to visit your range facility and shoot their own handgun from their own holster at whatever speed they wished. Why, when you won't let a member do it, or more likely, why not?

I live in downtown Toronto.

I find the Grange gun club (located at Target Sports in Gormley (just north of Markham)) to be easy to get to by highway, and have excellent facilities. It's an expensive club, but you will get your money's worth if you shoot regularly.

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't one of those rules that you can only shoot lead? Stupidest rule in todays age of copper plated bullets which is just as soft on a backstop as lead.

WTF!? Some range 'rules' in Canada just make me:

All this great talk about Galt! Sounded like a place I have to join ASAP, website look great everything I'm looking for........then I read this review on a website from 3 months ago......
"I went for a visit and to check out their facilities and was thoroughly blindsided. Not only were the people vague, but they were borderline rude and snobby. The indoor gun range is somewhat permanently closed with no expected re-opening to be given at this time. The rifle range is not available to anyone unless they have been a member for more than 2 years by their estimate and the handgun range requires that you take their own handgun test. Basically a "old school clay shooting members club". I am 50 yrs old and not accustomed to being treated like a slave on a plantation.... for the honour of paying them $500-$650 a year to be treated like utter dirt."

Anybody a member from Galt here care to clarify? Is there restrictions on the rifle range for new members? Do I have to take a course to shoot handguns? Is it an old boys club? I'm not paying money to be looked down upon, racism is my biggest pet peeve in this sport.

I am a member there, and here is how it goes.

Yes Galt has had it's lows recently. Since about October the indoor handgun range has been closed due to lead contamination. This was caused by people doing something so bat #### retarded I won't even bother explaining it.

Galt has an Archery section, clay section (trap, skeet, etc...), rifle (non-restricted), clay trail (like a nature trail with clays that you shoot as you move along) and handgun section.

The handgun section has an outdoor facility AND an indoor facility, outdoor has a 25, 30, 50, 100 and 200 yard range, there is also a 25 yard side range in which you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Outdoor was being rebuilt this year at the same time the indoor closed down so there was a point a few months back where you could only shoot at the side pit. But everything outdoor is open and up and running again as of now.

Indoor is scheduled to re-open in March. It's a decent range with max distance 25 yards. While the outdoor you can't shoot past 2200hrs the indoor is by key card access and is open 24/7 365. Yes as I night shifter I go shoot at 3am regularly.

After one year of membership you can shoot restricted rifles on the outdoor handgun ranges. The rifle section is backlogged on applications so you can't get in, and it's only for non-restricted so as an AR15 guy I could care less.

Just like any Ontario club they do have the RPAL rehash lesson, probationary period and 9 probationary shoots before they allow you full member status and get you your ATT. If you want to draw from a holster you do need to take their course.

I think the above is stupid as all hell but it's the best your getting anywhere remotely close to the GTA. You can shoot without RSO, you can do all the rapid fire in the world, use whatever targets you want, whatever "tactical" guns you want and any ammo that isn't AP or tracers.

Please specify.

Anything in proper "416" Toronto or true GTA is like that. I'm not going to single anyone out and get in some kind of pissing contest with somebody who is a member from whatever club I call out.

All I know is the club I go too allows shooting pretty much any ammo, any type of targets, shooting at any time, shooting without an RSO, shooting as fast as you like, etc... And guess what, there hasn't been an accident.

Clubs in the GTA bar most of the activities I just stated under the pretext of safety.

The previous Mayor of Toronto (David Miller) was more anti-gun than Wendy Cukier.

And no, that's not an exaggeration.

A lot of the kids on this site whine and complain because they feel privilege is due by having a PAL, and they can finally realize their video game fantasies and double tap to their hearts content. The reality of a club like the TRC is that there are neighbours across the street and a school next door! Plus a city councillor who hates the club. This isn't club in the middle of no where on an acreage or on a industrial estate. Rules aren't that bad, they just exist and if you want to enjoy the club and its spirit you either submit or go elsewhere. I witnessed some real stupid gun use at Silverdale a few times and eventually these problems needed to be addressed. I feel for anyone who must adhere to the CFO rules as its not easy. And I comment clubs like SIlverdale who continue to try snd help shooters enjoy the sport with such large memberships.

Living in east york i went through the same futile seaech you are going through after weeks of deciding i figure the Aurora gun club was my best option. Its a straight shot up the 404 to aurora rd, year around indoor shooting,2 stores to get ammo on the way ( lebarons and target sports) and its not too busy. the only issue is it's just a ##### to get there during rush hour, otherwise it's a great club.

Accept no 460 or 500mag :( and technically they should be checking the speed of 357, 44 Mag etc that people bring in. They #id it's 1500fps or less. So no Cci stingers either.....

Outside of that, I would have joined.

I shoot 357 and 44 there regularly without a problem, aren't there 460&500 loads available under 1500 fps?

I live in Toronto for sure it is the worst city in this country if you want to shoot. The game plan is making you to give up shooting sport and look for something else to play.
I like my club and folks here are great. 5 rifle probation shoot if done and become a full member. 5 more handgun shoot if you want to shoot handguns. Rapid fire is allowed and holster course is available if you want holster action. Cowboy action or IPSC is also available. Folks here are long time member and all know each other well. It is a outdoor range but that is what I like.

I used to live near Burlington and it sucked there too for shooting. I used to hump it to EESA near Alymer which was about 100 km away. I now live in Northern Alberta and finding places to shoot is not an issue.

what i'm trying to say it that they say nothing over 1500FPS, so that should mean no 357mag, 44mag, 22 stingers, etc. with a 700gr bullet it won't go over 1500fps.

Really? I shoot 180gr 44mag there regularly. Even bought several boxes of Hornady 460mag 200gr rated @ 2200fps (100yrds)180gr from them and shot it without any issues from management. Maybe the just like me....

My understanding is any HG caliber....no rifle cal unless its frangible.

You can only shoot pistol calibers at Aurora. No rifle calibers whatsoever. But you can bring in a Cx4 or Kriss Vector for instance. There is that rule that ammunition must travel under 1500 fps. The largest caliber I have seen shot there is .44 Mag. One hell of a bang indoors! I'll see what the biggest caliber you can bring there when the website is up again :)
