I was looking at getting some Chinese surplus to dink with at 500-1000 yards. Anyone used it? Im just looking to get some good trigger time and put 500 rounds through the rifle and get comfortable before I start reloading and getting serious as I am still under a year old shooter. Mind you im a pretty decent shot.

Not the Nirvana but alot better and consistant that i thought, on par with UMC stuff, it is worth the price... Out of my NM M1A more than decent ammo... JP.

ah ok, I was looking to use in my savage fcp-sr bolt action rifle.

I would not run the Norc in my precision bolt action, as the ammunition is not made for use in a preceision rifle. Rather, the Norc ammo is milspec and made to run in semi autos. Having said that, I have an Israeli Mauser designed to shoot 7.62x51 that I would shoot the Norc ammo in without hesitation.

Indeed - lets put it this way - I use the Norinco 7.62x51 in my Browning 1919A4 and (soon) my SG542.

For precision, I use handloads in my Rem 700.

As noted, I find it more accurate than other surplus I've tried - but it seems to be pretty hot. We had noticeable primer flow in my brothers 700.

Garbage in-garbage out, but who knows maybe your rifle will shoot 1 MOA with it.
I wondering what you will be learning by blasting 500 rounds down range at 500-1000 yards? You will be farther ahead by wasting your barrel life by finding a handload that will group well.
Just putting lead down range will not make you a better wind reader (this is where the matches are won).

I bought some Norinco .223 ammo when I started shooting, with the same idea as you. I had 3 pierced primers in one box of it, which blew hot gas and burning powder out the back of the rifle. I've never had a single issue with any other factory ammo or my handloads. I decided right then and there to stay away from their ammo. .308 might be different, and I know plenty of people shooting the .223 stuff with no issues, but for me it just isn't worth the risk of damaging my rifle, or worse, hurting myself or someone else.

Listen to what is being said here. Your rifle will no doubt make this ammo go bang but that may be about it. It is not very accurate stuff for use past 3-400 m. With that said you may not get any training value out of ammo like this by shooting it a longer distances. The long range game is one of confidence. When one link in the chain is questionable it is VERY easy to get confused about results and/or pissed off or frustrated. If you decide to go ahead with it that's fine too however just realize that your results will be limited.

Im fairly confident with my 300 but not the 308 yet. It was a 40 kmph day and I banged a 1 ft gong first shot at 600 with the 300 win mag. I know that rifle very well. Was just going with the practice makes perfect stance. Mind you it was a 180 grain. The barrel life on the SR is pretty long so im not super worried about that. I have some Remington UMC 150 grain FMJ That didn't preform to badly anyone have experience with that? When I went ammo shopping last time the polymer tipped rounds were out of stock so :(

From what I have heard here I will not be buying surplus, may as well just get a kit for 308 to reload with it seems. Or keep spending like 50 bucks for 20 rounds of poly tipped ammo lol

I was once told by some international shooting coaches that practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. No point in practicing things that may lead to confusion or bad habits. ;)

If you are buying it for precision long range tiny groupings or competition dont bother. If its for plinking or general shooting or ur norinco m14 shoot it all day, i love it. Zero issues in my socom and shoots rather accurate for surplus. I switched to commercial ammo and it shot a group at least half the size of the norinco stuff so just be aware of that.
