Hey all i am looking to get a new rifle the model i want is a remington 700 sendero chambered in 7mm Rem Ultra Mag but seems to be a tough one to find now since remington discontinued it. Now to stay with that model i could go with 300 ultra or switch models down to the 700 sps and get 7mm ultra. and thoughts as to difference between 7mm ultra and .300 ultra?
thanks fellas.
Paul

Ultra Mags aren't exactly precision rifles. They're hunting rifles.
An SPS is a lower end M700. Different stocks and finishes. Same rifle otherwise. You might still find a Sendero on a dealer's shelf. Or may be able to get one if the dealer's supplier has one. Ammo is horrendously expensive. Frontier is list 1260 grain Rwem ammo at $99 for 40 rounds.

I think these are going to be an interesting rifle: http://remington.com/en/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-long-range.aspx

They are offering them in several magnum calibers as well as standard. Grouse River is listing them for 750, which is a bargain considering they come with a very desirable (in my mind) Bell and Carlson stock on them.

It is a nice rifle as well. but dont think they chamber in 7mm ultra.I am sorta stuck on 7mm Ultra ony because i fell in love with 7mm STW and the 7mm ultra is very similar.

I am doing a semi custom 7mm ultra up for a guy now with load development. It's a 700 action, so far it's an accurate rifle, obtain MOA or even .5 from a couple groups. I don't think the barrel wear would be that great on them, but I could be wrong, if I were doing a precision build ( which I already have) I would be looking 300 win or .338 Lapua for a highpower, high velocity round with exceptional barrel wear and accuracy. Jmo

what do you figure the life expectancy of a 7mm RUM barrel is?

Sorry, I saw 7mm mag listed under calibers not realizing that 7mm ultra mag was a different beast entirely.

In my experience the 7mm Ultramag will have an approximate barrel life of around 900- 1000 rounds if you take good care of it( don't heat it up).

I was crunching some numbers of the 300WM vs. 300RUM and the ultra mag will drive projectiles only 5% faster than the regular magnum. Yet they sure charge a lot more than 5% extra for ultra mag ammo! This is calculated from data found on wikipedia, so don't freak out if your calculations, experience or opinions differ. By the same data, the win mag is 25% faster than .308win so a significant increase there.

I was considering the Ultra Mag for a custom project, and it just doesn't seem worth it for the extra cost when compared to a minimal increase in performance. 300WM will do just fine for what I want to do. Rocky Rod & Gun will be expanding to a 1200m range, and the 300wm should stay supersonic beyond that range anyway.

Here are the numbers for equal Remington loads from their web site, both are Premier Core-Lokt loads with 180 grain Ultra Bonded PSP, 300 RUM 3250 fps, 300 Win Mag 2960 fps for a difference of 290 fps so it is a bit better than what Wikipedia said. Like you said there is nothing wrong with the 300 Win Mag either, the barrel should last longer and you use less powder if you reload.

I personally think the RUM's are hype unless you go to the 338 edge ... 300 rum and 7rum are not worth the small amount of extra performance verses the cost of powder , barrel life and recoil. Just my personal opinion.

Barrel life alone I would go with the 300rum for sure. Ive heard from gunsmiths talking about commonly rebarreling 7rums after only 600 rounds. That's why they just are not selling as much

Honestly ive been seriously considering the 7rum with the new 195 berger that will need a custom twist but ... I really don think its worth it

The reason you would ever want a RUM is simply cuz its bad ass my cousin has a Remington 700 7mm RUM that thing is a thing of beauty drops moose like there nothing that why you would want an RUM cartridge

If you look at the numbers are not that much more " BADASS " than 300wm or a 7rem mag ... If your a number cruncher ultra mags are not that great ... If you want a cartridge that say's " ULTRA MAG " on the side of it ... then I guess they are " BADASS ! "

Honestly im not knocking them ... there's no question, they rip ! but if you look at the economics of it , again ... recoil , powder burn , barrel life vrs other cartridges that are out there ... they are not worth it

Lots of guys just buy them because of the marketing. If you know the actual facts and you want to buy one because you can justify the bit of extra performance and you don't give a crap about barrel life ... then get one , I wouldn't knock anyone for it

But if you buy one because you want to brag that your's is an " UTRA MAG " ... If you do that around guys that really know whats what , your gonna look like a tool.

The reason I brought up the 338 edge is because ... for those that don't know, the 338rum case is smaller than the 300rum case ... so guys neck up the 300rum case to the 338 round so they can push a heavier bullet with a higher BC that's where the " 300 EDGE " came from ... Then you can get into 338 lapua territory ... thus making a huge jump in energy at long range. That is worth it if that's what you want.

This is obviously common knowledge and im assuming most of the guys here know this

I just figure its either 7mm rem mag or 300wm ... if that's not enough for you then you need to make the real jump to 338 edge or 338 lapua. I don't think a moose is going to drop a whole lot harder inside 500 yards from a 180gr going 2950 or a 180gr going 3200 ...

Im not a moose hunter but I have some friends that are ... I have a buddy running a custom Weatherby mag running a 168 berger vld at 3000fps ... he has filmed every moose he has shot ... ive watched a half dozen videos myself ,every moose was inside 300 yards but ... not one even took a step.
