Vegan vs Meat Eater

I remember years ago, K.D. Lang who is from Consort, Alberta came out and said she was a Vegan. Her picture was posted on a billboard that was on one of the entries of town and it said something to the effect that Lang was a product of Consort and how she made it big in the music business. A day or two after the sign went up some locals put up (in big letters), EAT BEEF DYKE! To this day I still get a chuckle out of that.

Vegan - old first nation word for doesn't hunt well......... (ah ya I guess a cesar salad and some fruit and veggies are also good in the mix)

I like Vegetarians, my freezer is full of them :)

+1.

I must hang with a good lot of vegans and vegetarians; I've never caught grief from any one of them about hunting. In fact, several approved of it, as what they have issues with is factory farming and animal cruelty, not what you put into your body. You gotta respect what people choose to do with their bodies in terms of feeding them - hypocrisy is the problem.

I've had a couple years of being vegetarian and vegan in the past, loved it and the food, I just loves me good meat... so I decided that I could address all my moral and health concerns and only eat meat if I kill it. Goddam is grouse tasty! :) I'm a huuuuuuuge fan of steak tartare, and I'm kinda curious to see if deer tartare is any good.

That Rinella guy is very well spoken, couldn't have said it better.
I'm a farmer and I'm curious do you have moral objections to farming and food production? I'd like to say that a lot of the negative ideas that exist about farming practices are untrue similar to a lot of what gets made up about hunting. Is there something in particular that you find offputting or would like to ask about? I may be able to shed some light. I'm not wanting to pick on you it's just that I browse a couple hunting sights and this comes up from time to time and I'm always curious what it is that people think we're doing.

My nephew was a vegan as a teenager. This is going back a dozen years ago. His teacher was a vegan and that's where he got it from. My brother, a hunter AND a teacher himself, was really pissed off that his son was being influenced to this degree by another man. Anyway, my nephew and his friends had formed a band that was actually going to do some gigging (playing in places). They had long hair which is mandatory if you play in a metal band. But then he started losing his hair. Was he upset or what! It was the end of the world! Going bald at 17! My brother told him that hair loss was not uncommon with vegetarians. This is probably bull$hit and my brother hadn't googled it to find out if it were true or not. It was the first thing that came into his head and he threw it out there. My nephew believed him and that was the end of the vegetarian diet.

Hahaha...that's a funny story. You know, I'm a musician, although at 49, my "hair band" days are long gone - but years ago, I once did a similar thing to help get a fellow musician away from his coke habit. He knew I was "into all that science and sh*t", and this being the days before the Interwebs, I convinced him that cocaine use caused extreme hair loss in men, and I swear, he quit that very same week!

I have no idea if it's true or not, but I like to think even if it's not, my little white lie (no pun intended) may have saved a life!

Small family farms are OK, it's the giant farms that bug me... animals crowded in crap conditions, not exercised enough and kept in conditions that necessitate the use of antibiotics. And growth hormones to plump them up faster to make more money at market. Disgusting. These are not myths; while the situation might be better in Canada then in the USA, this goes on up here too.

And even if an animal lives a wonderful life on a farm, if they're not slaughtered on the same farm... then a terrifying trip that takes how long, making the last hours of their life miserable. Whereas with a rifle/shotgun/bow, that animal is free until *wham* lights out with no-warning. I can guarantee that animal a far more merciful end then it would see under any other condition.

I should be clear; I come from a long line of farmers on my dad's side, I've spent time at farms, so I have no illusions about what goes on there, other then insane amounts of work and getting up waaaay to early :) Pigs are the worst, I swear those things sound like people being tortured, it's like the pigs know their time has come and start freaking out. Can't stand it.

I did not intend to paint all farmers with the same brush; but you gotta admit that a lot of modern farming practices regarding animals are pretty ####ing disgusting nowadays. And too many farmers are forced into this due to cost concerns and all sorts of legal and political BS, or they'll go broke, and wind u p getting bought out by Monsanto or ConAgra or whoever. I don't know how people manage to farm nowadays without going insane from stress, worry or BS. It's a hard life.

There are different kinds of farming. If you strive to be like Joel Salatin http://www.polyfacefarms.com/principles/ then kudos to you. I would gladly eat your produce and/or livestock.

If you are a part of this, however, then no thank you.

That was a pretty good answer, and I think even the vegan realized that.

My approach to food is the same as my approach to god, guns etc.
I don't care what you do, as long as you understand that it's a personal choice and you respect my right to my choice.

I'm a vegetarian fwiw.

I'm curious about your opinion on something, if you don't mind me asking.

Who do you understand and respect more; meat-eating hunters or meat-eating anti-hunters?

I kind of have the opinion that if you're not willing to kill something yourself, then you shouldn't eat it. The usual response is "I don't have time to raise livestock or go hunting" to which the response is "But if you did, would you?" If they're not willing to do it themselves, then they're hypocrites. You don't get to proxy your killing onto someone else and then claim something's wrong with people who hunt/shoot animals, while you go home at the end of the day to eat beef tacos.

But that's exactly what many people do. Sneer at the hunters while they cram their pie-holes full of CAFO-burgers.

I can't wait till the collapse; all those douche-bags will have nothing to eat. Only hunters, anglers and gardeners will remain.

Excellent answer, took a situation would could have easily been a meat eater vs vegetarian/vegan philosophical debate (or shouting match) and kept in informative, polite and civil.

Honestly the only reason I checked this out is because I'm a vegetarian myself, but I'm glad I did. I feel like he touched on something I felt, but hadn't been able to put into words yet. The hypocrisy in this world is staggering, and the grocery store meat eaters who despise hunters are just another example of it. Just as bad are those who "choose" vegetarianism because they don't believe in killing animals. Far too many don't do any research on a healthy vegetarian/vegan diet, and they end up lacking proteins. This is not a healthy diet! It's possible to be vegetarian and still get protein, but they don't so they get health problems and go running back to meat...what happened to your ideals?

Oh, and if you guys think you have it bad being pro hunting carnivores, try being a pro hunting vegetarian! :p I'm often asked how I can choose vegetarianism and still be pro hunting and want to go myself. Well, first of all that assumes I've chosen to be a vegetarian...but my typical reply is 'well I still have a family to provide for. They eat meat.'
