Im a left handed shooter and looking to build a good accurate long range rifle...looking for any kind of input like caliber, what barrel, what action, optics etc etc. I dont have to shoot left if its going to be just a bench/bipod rifle. I have a few rifles that shoot quite well but i want to take lessons locally shooting +\- 1000 yards.

Budget for rifle ?

budget for scope ?

Are you looking to hunt with it ? IE will it be carried ?

For me ... LR budget is usually around $6500, for some the sky is the limit ... Although this can be done for $2000

Sounds like youve done 0 research yet want all the answers judging by your name start with a savage and take it from there.

are you looking to have a rifle built? or are you just planning on buying a rifle and mounting a scope and calling it your build.........2 totally different worlds...........

you can assemble a rifle 2 ways, buy one and mount a scope then shoot it........or you can buy a custom stock, a custom action...then a match trigger and a custom match barrel that will require a long wait, gunsmith, more money, same optics........and actually call it a rifle build.....

Im looking for help and input...i have done research and know a fair bit about rifles and shooting/hand loading...so if ur going to be negative then dont comment at all. Dont really have a set budget just going with the flow.

Doesnt really matter i dont think...single shot would be fine we are just target shooting for fun and im taking lessons with reg wales next year he teaches a little bit of everything u need to know about shooting at that distance..he prostaffs for vortex optics.

so I guess your going with a vortex scope then............

FTR is going to require 308 or 223...........FO is pretty much anything goes...........but you might want to build to weight just incase you decide to compete, if not and you sell it there will be better return on the dollar if it falls under weight then over.........

lots of info over on 6br about custom actions and the likes......not sure who is making left handed actions though......you might have to start sending out lots of emails.........the other option is to buy a Remington or savage action and have it trued....

custom build could run you upwards of 5 grand depending on what you want, and seeing that you on the fence and just dabbling in getting your feet wet I would recommend buying something good in a left configuration and go and shoot.......if its your thing then have a rifle built, your looking at almost a year turn around for getting all your parts so until then get yourself a tikka tactical or varmint in 308 left hand and go make some holes and pound on some gongs.........

Yo dave, thanks for your input! I actually have a t3 lite stainless .243 left hand and a savage 16FLHSS .22-250 but im leaning more towards .308. Not in a big hurry to build it really just didnt really know where to start but i will start looking for an action and go from there.

I would buy a stock Savage, or Remington (preferred!) and shoot it, then upgrade to what ever you want from there. By the sounds of it you are unsure of what you even want, and have done very little research.

I currently have a Remington 700 Police in 308, I have about $5,000 invested in this rifle including the scope. (AICS, Badger FTE brake, Badger 20moa base, Badger Rings, Badger bolt knob, Nighforce NXS 5.5-22X56) Stuff gets super expensive in a hurry when it comes to precision rifles, just keep that in mind.

seriously ! what is your budget ?

There is not set budget! Whatever it ends up costing i dont really care! But if im going to spend $6000 il put it in my fox body mustang lol realistically i would like to be $2000 range but like i said im just piecing this together nor in a rush.

$2000 is not going to get you custom anything with optics. Your pretty much going to be at a Rem 700 Sendero with a Sightron S3 for optics ... is my suggestion. I don't personally like savage but if there is a gun that they make for around $1000 do that. $2000 dosnt go very far in the long range community.

My first custom was $6300 with Night Force optics. My G7 range finder was about $2200 with taxes when I bought it , my Swarovski HD spotter was about $2800 all said and done. All pretty high end stuff but ... a pretty normal LR kit ... " $11300 " will get ya started.

And you could easily add 5 or 6K to that number if you went to a 338 in a modular chassis and Vectronics range finder

Pretty tough to get into a decent rifle with optics and a good range finder such as the new Lica 1600B for less than $3500

Wasnt intended as negative but there are 100's of these threads where somebody asks a question like this then poof disapears and dosnt respond to posts. Good luck with your build and I love the .308 as well.

Optics is not really an issue i have a vortex viper hs LR that would probably do the trick...just wanted opinions on actions and barrels mostly...and what ppl would recomend for a decent stock for the $$. Boyds stocks any good?probably going with a .308 because brass and bullets are everywhere.

Any match barrel will be good. I usually like to use what the gunsmith im using likes. One gun smith I know cant get results with Hart , another guy I know can only gaurentee results with Hart. If I want a Hart im not going to send one to the guy that dosnt have luck with Hart.

So , Hart , Shilen , Krieger, im having one built on a PAC NOR right now , again if you want a Hart ... find a gunsmith that likes them. Send it to him

Cannot comment on the Boyds stock never owned one.

As far as the action. Remingtons are nice because they are in abundance and any gunsmith can get them to shoot. If you want to go custom action your going to kick the crap out of your $2000 because your not going to get bottom metal or a trigger when you pay $1500 + dolllars for it.

Custom actions I like , Surgeon and Stiller but , again ... get your wallet out

If you have lessons scheduled for next year from some Reg something or other, why not pick his brain? Remember, this is the internet. Could be 15 year olds giving you advice.

If there's no set budget, maybe look into getting one of these?

Or maybe give Remington a shout and see if they can build a left-hand XM2010 or MSR....I think it might just be a matter of calling them up and tell them you want you reach out to 1,000, but make sure you tell them there is no set budget, or they may put you on a long waiting list.

There's also PGW....maybe have them build something for you in a Cadex chassis? At least it's local and you won't have to fart around with ITAR.
