Ok, hello all! As you can see I'm new to the site but not necessarily new to shooting. Just purchased a 597, lapped the scope rings, installed a shiny new scope, boresighted, loaded up a mag and off to the range I went. Boy was I disappointed!

Catastrophic extractor failure after the 1st shot. So I did some more research, decided I'm keeping the rifle and want to do all of the "upgrades". I would like to replace the extractor and hammer with Volquartsen pieces as well as replace the hammer spring and spacers with the aftermarket units. I will also be doing all the required cleaning, polishing and reassembly procedures that my research has uncovered to make this thing a nice shooter.

So my question is:

Where the hell do I get these parts in CANADA??? Is there a dealer in our great nation that will provide me with these items? I phoned around to several retailers in the US and none of them would ship to Canada. My local hardware store sells guns but i'm afraid the process of getting them to order anything like this would be just too painful based on my previous experience.

Any input would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I would go for warranty, even if you want to upgrade. Its BS it broke on the first shot and you should let them know, or others will be in your shoes. manufacturers are cheeping out and hoping to get away with it. if the dealer won't honor it then I would go to remington.

I ordered it from Cabellas and had it shipped. I fully intend on letting them know it broke but I won't be sending it back for warranty just to have them put inferior OEM parts back in, theres just no point. When I took it apart, it was dirty as hell, oil everywhere and lots of machining debris and what looked like dirt. I would rather pay the $150 for the better parts and their shipping than re-assemble my rifle, pay to have it shipped to them, then wait 10 years to have it fixed when I could do a better job myself with better parts. Im just stubborn I guess.

It didn't happen to be a Winchester M22 round you fired off, did it?

Just saw a recall on those, where they double-charged some lots...

Bad luck either way. Good luck with the repairs :)

I bought a Henry rifle from Cabelas that was defective from the first shot. Like you, I fully expected the usual gunsop routine. Send it for repair, wait months, etc. They replaced it with another new one with absolutely no hassle. It's worth your time to give them a chance to make it right. I can give you the name of a vendor for the hammer spring and bushings if you PM me. I got my 597 VQ hammer and extractor from Milarm in Edmonton.

I hope I am missing something here. Was this a brand new gun? If so you didn't mention taking it apart before you shot it to clean all the packing grease and machining debris from the internal parts and the bore. You only mention doing that after you shot it and had your problem. You have to disassemble and thoroughly clean any new gun before a shot is ever fired as the packing grease/oil in the bore can cause a serious overpressure situation and even if it doesn't you pack the shipping grease/oil into the grooves which can really affect accuracy. If I am reading your posts wrong I apologize.

I see you bought it at Cabelas so it was a new gun, missed that on the first read, my bad.

I ordered my 597HB from Cabelas a few months ago now. I have probably put 500+ rounds through it without a single problem yet. Sounds like bad luck. Hope you get everything squared away. And happy shooting.

Anyone know where I can find this aforementioned Volquarsten parts in Ontario? Preferably closer to Guelph if it can be done?

Sounds to me like you didn't clean it first.

Did you check Western Gun Parts in Edmonton?

Brownell's sells 597 parts.

Uhhh did you start plugging away with a brand new rifle without even cleaning it first? Did you not check the chamber? The very first thing I do with any gun is to strip it right down and give it a good cleaning. Otherwise you wind up with machining debris and other crud in the chamber and action. (I learned that the hard way with cosmoline)

I asked him that in post #11 and he still hasn't answered that one to let us know:)

I just bought a Remington 597 HB as well from my local fun store, they told me to clean it first and of course I did. I was quite surprised to see what crap was in there, it was my first time buying a new rifle instead of a milsurp or a used one.

There was like this grainy salt crud covering the inside behind the bolt and on the springs, and the bolt was resisting backward movement slightly, initially I thought that was just due to the nature action, but after cleaning and oiling I found the action to be smooth as silk, I cleaned and oiled the mag as well, which was also kinda stuck with that grainy stuff.

I put 150 rounds through her after and had 1 jam which bent the cartridge, and that was on the first mag, and 4 FTF due to the crappy ammo I was using. Apart from that it was absolutely flawless, and I was shooting it in -11 deg C weather.

I'm absolutely impressed with the rifle, for the same price as a standard 10/22 I got this 597 with HB and scope, and the scope is surprisingly nice to boot.

I also much prefer the ergonomics of the 597 over the 10/22, the mags are much easier to take out. I'm also surprised as to how simple these mags are, simpler than the 10/22 mags.
I think I'm going to design a mag for the 597 that uses an extended follower and rubber bands that I can 3D print, when I have time that is.

Any way, point I was getting at is that you really need to clean em before shooting, and that the 597 is a great rifle, so don't let 1 horrible experience completely sour your view of em.
