Need help with 870 or 500? what one to buy?

i am looking at these 3 guns in the photos.
a local store has the 870 for $299 and the 500s for $350.

i have owned an 870 before but not the 500. i think the 870 is a good deal but i know i will still have to get a pistol grip for it and maybe later a magex so the price will be more around $400 but the mossys come with it.
should i change from 870 to 500 or stick with the 870?
are they both still made in usa?

i like to shoot slugs mostly and off the pistol grip for buckshot and that kind of thing.

My brother in-law had nothing but trouble with his NOS Mossberg. Both he and I vote 870. He did eventually find a bur that had to be filed down and get it straightened out. My Wingmaster goes boom every time since the day it was born in 1972. I, in my opinion, find accessorizes cheaper and easier to get for the 870.
 
One thing about 870's is that parts from a 50 yr old gun will fit one brand new out of the box. They got it right the first time. I just took an old wingmaster and replaced the ejector and ejector spring to allow it to shoot 3" shells, and it took about 15 minutes
 
That's a 6 of one half a dozen of the other question. Both guns are reliable great guns. The only functional difference is the safety placement. If you want a pistol grip go 870 if you want a straight stock go 500 or 870. Sorry if this post doesn't pick a winner for you.
 
I'm going to check them out tomorrow. I think I need to see what feels better. I think I like the look of the 500 more.
 
You might want to get the 500. It has everything right out of the box. Also remington quality has really gone down in the last few years. If you get an old 870, that would be ok too. But a brand new 870 I would pass on it. Cheers
 
Buy the 870 ... I have been a loyal mossberg 500 supporter for decades-ish ! After their duckcommander pistol and the rifle mags potentially going prohib, Remington gets my vote . Any company that will hang a nation of customers out to dry doesn't need my business .
 
I have a new 870...goes bang every time...my suggestion ? get both and find out what one is the one for you...sell the one you don't want to your buddy that didn't shoot but you convinced to take the CFSC, get his PAL or RPAL and joined either the NFA or CSSA...that's my suggestion...then he can do the same thing...
 
I went Mossberg (590A1). Fit me better and I like the location of the safety and slide release better.

Good choice. But honestly you can't really go wrong with either option, if you have realistic expectations for a $300 shotgun.

Remington really did get it right the first time. They have made very, very few alterations to the design over billions of units of production. And no plans for a new model or redesign... The Mossie is just fine, too. I think it's more about personal preference for the "feel" of the gun. I personally dislike the finish on the 870 Express, but not nearly as much as I dislike the location of the safety and slide release on the Mossie, so I go 870.
 
Niether. Get the 590 and the Wingmaster. Forget the new style 870's.
If you can't get both right now, get the 590, they are tanks designed to take a brutal beat down, and sling slugs pretty good too.
