NM M1A ready for distance....

I did finalized my scope business on my NM M1A, went with a S&B 3X12X50 Klassik FFP L7 reticle... This rifle desserve to get top glass as the accuracy is there so this should be the final set up for it, when snow go away i will try it at various distance up to 800 metres, there i will be able to assess the real potential of my NM... JP.

Ahhhh. What a fine rifle, Caramel. You will have to post some pics when you get it out to the range as well.

Will you be putting a bipond on the M1A as well? I will be really interested in hearing what you think about that cheek pad too...
 
No bipod is planned and the cheekrest so far after 200 rounds + is just perfect for what it is intended to do, the other option would be to order a M21 adjustable checkrest stock from SA, will talk to Clay about it... JP.
 
You've got the glass there for sure, and if you've got 800 meters caramel, that will wring out the platform to it's considered maximum effective range. I believe 800 was what the US army considered the properly set up M-14 with LC match ammo during Vietnam? Seems I read that anyway and of course max effective means wounding ability on a silhouette. I have it in a book here as to the expected MOA from a properly built M-14 to NM standards with the LC ball ammo.

MOA to 800 yards with any ammo, even the best upper dupper reload would be incredible from a semi rifle, i would be very happy to get those results... JP.

Caramel I didn't mean the M-14 sniper rifle would shoot 1 MOA or yours should shoot 1 MOA, what I meant was whatever MOA, 1, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5. etc, the m-14 sniper rifle could produce at distance meaning 8-12-16 or 20 inch groups at 800meters.

You are correct on a Semi doing 1 MOA at 800 meters or 8-10 inches groups. Good luck with your shooting when the snow clears.
 
L4TR with those groups I saw on your LRB's with that standard grade ammo, I think you already have the potential to squeeze the M-14 out to it's max effective range with tailored loads in 168class.

Shooting at 100yrds with no wind is one thing, 800 is another. I know the rifle has the potential just wonder about my eyes, didn't need corrective lens till a couple years ago and it's been a downward slope ever since. I'm grateful there still keen enough to hunt and shoot though :) also those groups were with 150 grain I highly doubt they'd work well at a distance. is there still online shoots going on? I'd like see how everyone's doing with their setups, be interesting to see the setup that work best, I'm betting the OP's is a contender

Caramel has the contender for sure, but seeing your groups at 100 with 150 economy ammo, I know those barrels will just suck right up 168grainers in match grade ammo(no .308Win can resist 165-168 class) and those rifles would be capable to 800. I know the wind, your eyes and such, but the potential is there to put rounds consistently on a Fig 11/59 with good glass and overcoming wind issues even at 800, I believe the 168 match round is still supersonic from the 22" bbl at 800?. Big clear Glass and a defined aiming point is very important at these distances, and the trigger pull off for sure.
 
I'm wondering now if anyone in the N.S. provincial rifle association , has fired this type rifle, NM standards with big glass,.. out to 800, the range goes that far? Curious of field results.

Caramel sorry to sidetrack your thread, but this is pertinent I think to your rifle and your OP.

I'd say the trigger would be the achillles heel in the M-14 at 800 meters. I know how much attention I have to pay to a stock trigger compared to most any run of the mill bolt gun trigger.
 
L4TR, this thread got me thinking and I dug out some old books I have packed away on US Sniping, ...yes when I was young there was no internet and if you wanted to know anything you had to buy a book you remember too I bet, ..but anyhow,.. the M-14(XM21) used by the US Army through the end of Vietnam and up to the bolt gun replacement, was called the 900meter killer. It was considered effective out to 900 meters and was worked to effect on NVA troops!
