In a moment of exasperation with my Hornady press I slammed the handle hard and sheared off the left hand pawl. Can anybody suggest the best place to get a replacement. I'm in the Ottawa area. I tried Sail, where I bought the press but they don't have any spare parts.
Thanks.

Dude, call Hornady, or email them! They will have one in the mail as soon as you notify them. No cost. Hornady's warranty is second to none. What locked up so bad you broke a pawl?

Can I guess?? lol, either a primer that got sucked back in after decaping?.... or a non seated primer?

No it was even more banal than that. I'm decapping a few thousand .45 cases and sadly- (because the primer system on my L-N-L sucks) I'm repriming using a hand primer before I do the rest of the steps. I know, I know - it defeats the purpose of using a progressive. Anyhow, I'm sending the cases through the merry-go-round and the "e-z ject" system is routinely not ejecting. So I slammed hard on the handle when I got pissed off and I heard the clatter of a tiny piece of metal hitting the floor - a piece of the pawl.

Tell Hornady about the priming issue as well. You will get the replacement parts for it as well, I just hard to deburr mine and it works great now but they sent me an extral shuffle just incase. They are great to deal with.

Maybe don't use these words "I slammed the handle" :)

In that case, tell them about the issue of the press not ejecting. If they dont have something for you to try I'd be surprised if they didn't send you a new sub plate as well.

While you have them on the phone..... Talk to them about you priming issues. They will walk you through some tuning steps or replace anything that needs it.

All progressive's require "tuning". But the lnl is a good press, Once tuned it will run like a top.

I had priming issues off the bat as well. This video helped me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6BfPn5QaiA

Ok so you have a few issues.

First are you using the #1 or #45 shellplate?
Second take a straight edge and check the bottom of the shellplate if it is warped.
If the cases get stuck on ejection and the base of the shellplate is not warped they will send you an updated sub plate.
If your pawl was not broken I would recommend numbering the 5 slots on the shellplate to see if it occurs on the same slot every time.
If your primers aren't going deep enough the new subplate is designed so that the primer punches are raised higher.
If the problem is that kernels of powder are getting stuck under the primer punches making priming a PITA they have new redesigned punches.

When you speak to them on the phone voice all of your issues and they should take care of all of them.

They sent me a new subplate and a shellplate when my .223's would hang up on ejection a couple of years ago.

Thanks for all the feedback. I sent them an email through their web page but I will contact them by phone and sort out all the issues with it that have been accumulating. Hopefully that'll all be done by the time Slicknova's #22 shell plate shows up so I can work on .30 M1 Carbine ammo.

Thump_rrr: I'm using the #45 shell plate for .45 acp. Why do you ask?

They used to say #1 would work for 45 acp, but using it resulted in feeding issues (when using a case-feeder) and ejection issues. so they made the $45. I think. lol

Slicknova beat me to it.

Slicknova, Thump_rrr and Seagull - Thanks for the advice to get in contact with Hornady. I talked to one of their technical reps and we went over the issues. Concerning the ezject problem he said to note what brand of case was hanging up the ejector as different case specs can cause this. I had already taken Thump_rrr's advice on seeing if there was any particular slot that was causing the hangup. We had a lengthy discussion about primer seating but we were unable to pinpoint a cause. He also included a hub drive because he thought that it was likely damaged if I had managed to shear the pawl. He has shipped out the following parts to try to rectify the situation.
LNL®AP EZ-JECT CONVERSION KIT
HUB DRIVE LNL® AP
SCREW FHCS 1/4-28 X 3/8
PRIMER SEATER PUNCH ASSY APLG
PAWL-NEW STYLE LNL® AP
SCREW 8-32X3/8 SBH W/NYL PATCH

Hopefully that'll get 'er going properly for once and for all. I'm pleased with Hornady's service and attitude and I'm looking forward to getting the L-N-L to churn out some great ammo.

ps. Slicknova - just got the shellplate today. Thanks again.

Hornady's warranty and the way they help you to go thru and get replacements are excellent.
I had media stuck in a case and broke de-capping pin and bent stem in die, Hornady mailed me whole new die, even after I told them it was my fault and warranty on the die was over (1 year).

So, even though my pawl is broken I have been manually cycling empty .45acp shells through to test out the Hornady rep's theory about the ezject system. Sure enough, 100% of the shells hanging up on the ezject are........ Norinco cases! I guess the dimensions are a little off the standard specs.

LOL I guess you gotta sort your brass now! :)

Whats happening with your priming?

Did you happen to check out that set up video?

My LNL had a bunch of issues, so many I eventually boxed the whole thing up and sent it back to Hornady, along with 3 of the 4 shell plates I had at the time. It came back mostly better, though they replaced the priming parts that I had deburred with brand new ones that needed to be deburred again. It now works flawlessly... in 3 of the 5 calibers I load in it. The other two still have troubles with ejecting from the shell plate. The fact that the stations in the shell plate aren't aligned with centre of the installed dies is only an issue with short, fat cases like the .45 auto. Of course I still need to use the brass follower rod I made for the primer tubes rather than the plastic one that came with it, or I get primers flipping sideways in the tubes... and the steel priming ram still digs into the aluminum frame so that it needs to be shimmed or the primers seat shallow.

All things considered, I wish I had bought a Dillon. Though I've never used one, so maybe they aren't any better.

I'm not going to tackle priming until I get the replacement parts. I watched part of the video. It's good but I'll watch the whole thing when all the parts arrive. I will do some of the smoothing with emery cloth that he recommends in the interim.
