About to purchase a Ruger 10/22 (stainless barrel, synthetic stock), HC3R mag, cleaning kit, lockable hard case, 2 boxes of Winchester ammo, training rounds, and ear muffs.

Looking at just under $500 all in, taxes, everything to a local shop, so no shipping on top of that.

Anything I should know, before I proverbially pull the trigger?

Sounds like you're all set to have some fun! As goose said, I think you'll find you need more ammo unless you're buying bricks. If you spot some CCI standard velocity give it a try; I found it to be real accurate out of my 10/22.

training rounds as in snap caps? If they're snap caps, just remember snap caps on rim fires, don't snap back if the firing pin hits them.

The store I'm getting the Ruger from sells both Winchester M22 high velocoty, and the CCI stinger hyper velocity. I figured I might try 1 500 round box of each to start with. The CCI is more than double the price of the Winchester.

I figure I'll start with 1000 rounds, and I can always pick up more from a few stores closer to me than the store I'm making the rifle purchase from.

Any suggestions on where to pick up a boatload of .22LR?

They are just dummy training rounds. I figure for less than $10, it's good to have them around for training my wife on safe procedure, and for any dry-firing/loading/reloading practice.

I already have a few pairs of clear safety glasses to get me started. If I decide I want something else after that it'll will be after taking a few shots and figuring out why I might not like the ones I already have and if I decide to get others, what features/tint/fit etc I would want them to have.

Actually I thought it was KY Jelly. Way to ruin your birthday present. ;)

There are several site sponsors that would happily sell you a pallet of .22 if you can afford it and they have it in stock

I was just making a joke dude. I have access to large quantities of ammo at anytime should I decide I need to stock up for world war 3

Both excellent ammo - good picks.

You'll find that CCI is generally among the more expensive offerings, but it compensates by being damned good stuff.

You got a place to shoot?
There's a range about 10 mins away. Will probably start out there. But I've also got a little crown land about 75 minutes away I am pretty certain is fair game, and will probably check out in the next few weeks in person first.

After you got your jolly's satisfied and can handle the firearm.. buy decent ammo, you'll get better accuracy and less failures to feed and fire. My vote is CCI standard in bulk was around .05 a round.

Try both and see what the rifle likes to shoot best, mine works pretty good with whatever Ive put through it so far, mostly Federal & Remington ammo, never had a hiccup yet.

LOL where can I get one of those. I want to see the looks on peoples faces going to the range with a bucket of bullets in one hand, and a bucket of KFC in the other. ;)
