Your 3-Gun Rifle Setup?

The last RM3G match had a 3/4 mile bonus shot and an IPSC sized metal target at 600 yards.

1200m - good luck with that one with most any auto loader.
550m - 'doable' with the right 16" barrel and ammo.
Just out of curiosity, what level of rifle shots are beyond 300m? 10-20%?

Its not the number of shots at long distance its just you will have stages with long range shooting where if you can't hit it your going to finish at the bottom. Last year in Texas they had a stage that was all rifle (you could use pistol) that started at 40 yards and ended with 2 targets at 480 yards and one at 535. Most US 3 gun will have a lot of 200+ yard shots. Usually small reactive targets and larger (12" to 18") plates once you over 300 yards.

And the natural terrain can kill you. I missed a target at AR15.com last year due to my position and the long grass and at FNH I had a problem seeing the skinny samies on one stage again due to long grass and the fact they were painted black.

It's pretty satisfying to hit these 200, 300, 400 + yard targets especially on the clock and under stress...
'You can strut around afterwards feeling all "yeah I'm that awsome"...

Then you realize there are guys making the same shots with iron sights..

I think hitting targets at 300-400 yds with iron sights is pretty much dependant on the size of said targets.

In this context no....
We're all shooting at the same targets.

The iron sighted shooters are in a separate division, but the stages don't change.

I shot the Texas Multi gun last year with the guy who won Vietnam division 20" AR with the handle and Iron sights and he hit everything except the 535 yard shot. He had better eyes with Irons than I had with my 2 - 8 scope!

There were some amazing people out there shooting old school with M1 Garrands, M14's at that match.

I am looking at my first AR and would like to get between a 10 and 12 inch barrel. If most Canadian 3g matches are shorter range would I be able to get away with the SBR. or should i be considering a 14-16?

You'd be fine with a 10.5"....As posted above, most of the time you won't be shooting beyond 150, 200 tops. I personally think the difference in weight and ergo's between the 10.5 and 12.5 is negligable, so I would opt for a 12.5 for the extra muzzle velocity.

I switch between a 10.5 ar and a 18.5 acr. 10.5 is certainly fun for 3g.

I am ready for my form 6 now. Versamax, JP Enterprises/ATRS, and Tanfoglio Stock II. :)

That shipped fast. It's set up for hot black box Federal so you may have to turn up the gas a little to shoot white box/PMC/etc..

Yeah thanks D! I love it! I finally got to sight it in. Wow what a difference from the ARs that are more for lack of a better word "combat style". The recoil is so soft and the trigger is outstanding! I adjusted gas block for my ammo and put some loctite on the gas block screw.

Multigun is so nice with a 3gun built rifle. I thought I built a great rifle that runs great and looks hot. I like to run hot stuff for ammo so yeah I warned you of that. Glad you enjoy it.
