According to the regulation summary, there is a winter hunt for Canada Geese from Feb 22-Mar 1 in Southern Ontario. I live in Ottawa and hunt in WMU64A. I don't remember ever seeing any geese during late February. Anyone out there know where in southern Ontario (hopfully near Ottawa) I can find them during the winter season?

I've been trying to track down the same sort of location. I'd start looking at places where there is farmland with little snow-cover that they can feed in, near some water that is open. I think that is where they would be.

they would be in fields with little to no snow, open ponds that get heated externally as like a cooling pond from a quarry, rivers. it takes a bit to track them down, but some stay all year somehow.

They usually fly over me around that time. I might take a shot at them this year as I got skunked in the fall. My hunting land butts up against a lagoon. This year is way different then last year so not sure if the water will be open or not. If the water isn't open I don't see them coming over. I'm about 10 hours from you so I unfortunately can't give you an idea of where to go in your area.

I'm out looking for the same thing. On my second tank of gas for the day. Seeing as how you hunt 64, If I find some I'll trade ya canada goose hunt for a snow goose hunt in 65 (we've been looking for a feller to scout for snows for our waterfowl hunt club). Might be a bit of a drive for ya, but when there's a will there is a way...

I see them off the highway but think this year with all the fields and freeze over it will be a tough spring hunt. Everything is frozen over. Fields are covered.

Hey, Remember that this early spring season is ONLY for areas WITHOUT Sunday gun hunting!!!! Just so everyone reading this doesn't go out and start blasting away in buddies farm field come march. Check your Regs. and the area where you want to hunt to make sure that you can't shoot on Sundays or else you may find yourself in a bad situation.

Go here and zoom in to find if you can hunt on Sundays in your area.

Go here to check the Regs. for the early spring hunt again.

I read it as the regulation says hunting is allowed between Feb. 22 to Mar. 1, 2014 (except for any Sunday within this period). (d)(e)

(d) In municipalities where Sunday gun hunting is not permitted by provincial regulations.
(e) Except in Wildlife Management Unit 94.

Same as any other WMA where there is no Sunday gun hunting.

Yes, that is correct. I just put that up there as there have been a lot of regions in south eastern ON. that have converted to sunday gun hunting and people may or may not know that. There are VERY few areas in south eastern ON. that don't allow you to hunt on sundays now.

I think I read your statement as the season was closed in any WMU that did have Sunday gun hunting. :/

Wrong :/

It is closed in all areas that have sunday gun hunting during this early spring hunt! That was my whole point! They do this to make up for the lost days in the non-Sunday gun hunting areas so that the number of days gets equalized to the Sunday gun hunting areas. You can only hunt geese during this early Spring hunt in areas where you can't hunt on Sundays.

Sorry, I don't see that anywhere. Can you post the relevant text?

Dude, you just posted the relevant text in post #10!!!!

(d) are the only places you can hunt for this small early spring season and they put the "except for any Sunday within this period" in because Feb. 23 is a Sunday and they want to make sure people remember that you can't hunt on Sundays during this early goose hunt so they spell it out.(e) states that you still can't hunt in WMU 94 even though it doesn't allow sunday gun hunting.

Remember, this is only for the southern region that people were talking about. I don't know about the other regions because I have never hunted there, but they can be checked out in the link I provided.

I will agree that the spring season does occur in District 4 only. Apart from that, I can't see it clearly from the regs. I guess if you plan to hunt in District 4 at the end of the month, be sure to contact EC and the MNR to verify you are legal.

Welp.

I dunno.

Read all of the goose dates. They go back and forth for sunday gun hunting areas and non-sunday gun hunting areas. Then they finish off with this early season goose hunt for only the non-sunday gun hunting areas with no mention of sunday gun hunting areas allowed for the same dates! They did this for the reason I mentioned above. You can try it but I guarantee that if you get caught in a Sunday gun hunting area hunting geese during this time you are F@CKED!

Smitsauce is absolutely right about this, do not hunt geese in the early spring season in an area that is allowed Sunday gun hunting. The waterfowl season is made to have so many days, this is why they give all the municipalities that don't allow Sunday gun hunting an extra week to make up for the Sundays they are not allowed to hunt. Also for the Ottawa area I've heard that Beckwith has just recently allowed Sunday gun hunting (this may or may not be true), if this is the case they may still allow the early spring hunt to finish the 2013-2014 season.
