Hey people....I'm gonna ask your opinion on a Coyote Blaster . I am knowledgeable about ballistics but just want some opinions on what Caliber and Rifles people like for shooting Coyotes ! I have a Ruger Hawkeye 7mm-08 with a Bushnell 5x15 scope that I have shot coyotes , deer and moose with. I shoot 140 gr.Federal Ballistic tips and everything has dropped with one shot . Absolutely LOVE this Rifle and Caliber....its a tack driver out to 300 yds..!! But like most gun nuts...I'd like another toy.!! Here's the Parameters....1) Under a Thousand bucks for Rifle and Scope...2) MUST be Flat shooting and FAST with little damage to hides/pelts...3) MUST be a caliber that is easy to find at local shops AND Affordable to shoot . Soooooo.....give me your HONEST likes/dislikes...!!!

Hide hunting is done with commercial fmj's. They're not the same as a military bullet. However, where you are matters. Some Provinces don't allow FMJ's for hunting anything.
I'd be looking at a Savage anything in .243 or a like chambering. A .223 would do but not out to 300. Re-think the factory ammo too. Reloading is your friend.

I like the 223. Carrying a Savage/Stevens 200 with a $125 scope and a Rifle Basix aftermarket trigger. Way under a grand but I like the lightweight aspect of it and I don't cry when it gets scratches and dings. Big heavy barrel varmint guns aren't my choice for slogging through February snow in Manitoba.
Nothing more affordable and available than 223. 22 250 or 243 Win would be the two others I'd put in top contention for your criteria.
Any Savage/Remington/Ruger/Tikka/whatever should fit the bill. Just figure out what you like best, put a bit of half decent glass on top and giver. Again, one of my biggest concerns in a coyote gun is the weight. Lugged 'the fencepost' (K98 with 308 bull barrel) around in the snow for long enough to appreciate a lighter rifle for this purpose.

Ruger light weight in 22 250 is what I shoot no problem out to 400 yards and that seems to be the most common cal we're we hunt. Dutc

I bought a new Tikka T3 lite for $699 and a used Bushnell Elite 4200 2.4-10x 40 for $200.

Absolute tack driver with handloads.

I use a .223 and a .243. You can use bigger caliber if you can sew pretty good. Or pick your bullet carefully.

Please don't use FMJ, especially in the winter, they ricochet terribly and quickly become a "to whom it may concern" bullet.

Dude where do you come up with this stuff? I don't know anyone that uses FMJ when "hide hunting". A 223 is just fine out to 300. Any VMAX/blitzking/varmint style bullet will work.

same gun as you have in 223 or 22-250 with same scope. you could try some barnes bullets in your current gun as they seem to be making just as small holes as the other calibers listed. I am trying them but have not shot that many to have an honest evaluation yet.

I've been packing a Remmy 700 in .223 and another in. .22-250 for snowshoeing while setting up for coyotes.

Both barrels are cut down to 19" since I'm no longer a tuff guy. LOL

All kinds of sound advice here so that yer #### won't fall off. Just park that heavy barrel .223 at home and save it for gophers this spring and summer.

Cheers, Barney.

7-08 has it all covered! your gains will be minimal with any caliber below 7-08, other than a few inches drop - I would keep shooting that beast and get some reloading stuff happening then try and stretch out your shots to 400-600! We shoot our 7-08's out to 700 yds no problem!

yep, thats my setup. nice, light, accurate and have lots of .223 ammo factory and handloads. Delivers 70 gr of copper/lead out to 200 yds and reaches 300 yds easy.

Thanks for all the info.!! I have used my 7mm-08 to drop several coyotes at ranges from 75 yds to about 250-275yds. The 140 gr ballistic tips do massive damage to the hide tho. I am not really concerned about that as I am not saving the pelts... it is more Bounty hunting out here. I also have a Mossberg model 142 that my Gpa ordered from Eatons catalogue back in 1947...It has the original 4x scope and has been used by practically every male cousin in my family. It was what my kids started on and is still a favorite to haul around but just doesn't have the range to reach out and kiss 'em ! I will probably look at a Savage Varmint in .223 or a Ruger American in 22-250 !

I shoot a Stevens in 223 with 53gr vmax that is very fur friendly

Picked up a Stevens in 243 that Im going to get up and runnin later when it get nice out

I picked up a Stevens 200 in a .22-250 (I know its ugly) topped off with a Burris full field 2 and I'm stuffing Winchester white box 45 grain JHP @4000 FPS. Coyotes don't like that set up.... Under $600.00 and it'll out shoot most $1000.00 set ups (so I've read)

The Stevens 200's don't have to be ugly!

I picked this up a week or so ago as you see it minus the bipod and 2 boxes of .223 for $400. I'm not loving the fixed mag but i'm starting to come to terms with it.
