fwiw...when I went shopping it came down to the fact that I could find ammo (454, 45LC, 460mag) to shoot the 460v. 500 ammo was scarce. As mentioned I'm not a reloader(yet).

The lee classic cast is a great press, if your trying to be really cheap then they have a "C" press for $40 I think. I have one and load 500mag on it without issue. I shoot 50 rounds per range trip and once I have enough brass piled up I prep the brass in one sitting (size, flare and prime).

My costs for cast bullets are about 5 cents a bullet (375gr up to 700gr in weight) And the same as Burnaby for powder and primer.

I prefer the old style compensator.

Part of my decision to buy the 460v was the ability to shoot milder 45LC, 454 Casull. I shoot indoors in a 10bay 25m range. Sometimes I feel sorry shooting full 460mag loads with other shooters next to me (but lately I haven't)

I prefer the 4"bbl with 1"compensator (=5":))

Agree they are all non mainstream which is what I was trying to get at. Ideas of having versatility of another caliber is that they are easily avilable, cheaper or other magically benefits. Don't see that with 454 nor 45.

Yup, buck a round with Berry Plated (.50 triple plated are rated for 2000fps) including brass.

I have a Hornady LNL. Need a progressive for the plinker 9mm, 357, 45 rnds. Get a good progressive, cry once. The hornady and Dillon are both good. Having trouble lately with 44mag, the brass is catching on brass ejection piece so I manually pull them out, inspect, throw into bucket. Seriously look into a Dillon if had to buy again, there is a good reason mfr reloaders like Custom Reloading services use them.

Yeah, 500 ammo are scared, cost me 80 bucks for box of 20 hornady.
Did you find the 454 and 45LC at the likes of Wally and CTC, or only at LGS?

Reluctant to cast for 500, only doing full load with 42gr of Lil'Gun with spec of 1912fps.
Find the recoil of Lil'Gun more controllable than 43gr of H110.
What powder are you using, what gr?

What mold are you using?
What kind of lead (WW, Linotype)?

I can find Hornady .454 Casull ammo at WSS. decent prices and different bullet weights too. Also, .45LC Hornady with the SST projectiles for a good price. Wanstalls has the .460 200 GN rounds for under $40.00 for 20 rounds. I love both guns but the 460V was sitting there calling out to me at Wanstalls and I had to have it. I have dies for all three calibers and I've collected quite a variety of projectiles. There is no doubt about one thing. They both wake people up. (Indoor or outdoor ranges.)

Another thing to take into consideration is if you reload but don't cast your own boolits, 45cal bullets are easier to find that 50cal bullets.
 
burnaby....keep showing those unfluted beauties and you're going to confuse the H3LL out of the OP as to what to buy. You're adding a 929 9mm...now I'm drooling.
I get most of my ammo @ the LGS (LeBaron).

i have 5 mold for my 500, lee 440gr, noe 375gr spire point, noe multigran mold (440, 540, 600, 640) RG4 (flat point or hollow points), mihec 600gr with 2 HP designs, and the mihec 700gr with same designs for HP as the 600. For lead i pretty much use what ever i can get accept for pure, as of late wheel weights plus 2% tin. For lube i make ben's red with an extra pound of beeswax i believe. hornady gas checks.

i use h110, lilgun, 2400, 4227 for my hot loads, SR4759, longshot, benchmark, 4198 for moderate loads and trailboss for light loads if i could only pick 3 powders it would be lilgun, h110 and trailboss. when i first got the gun i was shooting mostly jacketed stuff but now that i have alot of molds for it it's 95% of what i shoot through the gun. most loads don't lead accept for a few, which i've stopped using.

excellent point! when you do find 50 cal stuff it's usually $1 per bullet (jacketed). i don't think i've ever seen commercial 50 cal lead stuff accept for black powder.

Recall HDY gas checks were not cheap, 80+ bucks/1000 here, add lead (freebies are getting hard to come by), and lube, getting close to Berry's price. Don't have to worry about leading with plated.

XTPs are buck a piece for 350gr, more for 500gr. US has commercial 700gr hard cast.
 
When I got my S&W 460V a couple years ago, I was flip-flopping between it and the 500. The ultimate deciding factor was the local indoor range. The 454, 460 and 500 are all listed as forbidden to use :(.
But I can shoot 45 Colt! :D 28grs of H110* under a 230 FMJ....:rockOn:

I unleash the 460's full potential outdoors, but it's nice to be able to take it indoors once in a while too.

gas checks are 67+ tax here, for my lead costs 1000 bullets is $50 and with my homemade lube about $10-15 for 1000 bullets. That's about $150 for 1k worth. Budget has same price for 500 rounds. Plus I some of the molds don't use gas checks. You don't really need them for the heavier bullets.
 
629 is always a good choice. Lots of stock both new & used and easy to sell.

Reloading is "cheap". Cast my own 240gr SWC for 3c, primer 3c, powder 2c (Titegroup for plinking) so 8¢ a round.
