Power of positive thought, Ptgmbguy! If you think "Don't run with your finger on the trigger" you'll put your finger on the trigger.
If you think "Run with my finger pointed away from the trigger" You'll succeed!
If you think it, it will happen - so don't even think you're going to DQ. Your black badge course taught you all the basics, all you need to do is focus on shooting As and stay safe by thinking "Muzzle downrange," Finger Out", etc and have a great time.
If this is your first match, introduce yourself to some of the veterans and ask for some help. Let the RO know it's your first match too and they usually will help you a bit more. Usually when people get DQ'ed it's for breaking 90, accidental discharge or not taking your finger out of the trigger when moving, clearing a malfunction or while reloading. Minor infractions will some times get you a warning. Major ones will get you DQ'ed. You need your finger to instinctually come off the trigger when ever you are not actually aiming at a target.
Practice moving around your hose with the muzzle pointed "Downrange" no matter which direct you go. Pretend there is a chain tied to the muzzle and it can't point another direction. It sounds silly but it works. If there is a starting up range stage, don't pull your gun out of the holster until you are pointed down range. Practice that at home too.
Inside, shooting the floor, ceiling or walls will get you DQ'ed. Make sure you don't put your finger on the trigger until you are aiming at your targert.
After some practice and a few matches, this will all become natural to you. Do keep in mind that even the best competitors eventually will get DQ'ed as we are pushing the limits and some times we don't think about a movement before we do it. We always error on the side of security so don't take it personally and learn from your mistakes.
With all that being said, you need to relax and have fun. It's your first match and getting through safely and enjoying it should be your primary goal. Good luck!

My first goal is not to go for ice cream (dq) I'm not caring about time or the hit factor. I want to be safe and alpha alpha. I'm not worried about it. And I will inform the ro's I'm a novice. The fun is in the safe use of the firearm. Speed will come with time and I'm in no hurry to get to it. Time is a virtue. I will take time and walk before running. Thanks for the pointers. Read the thread at the tip of this forum. You will see why it is not a good idea to joke about it. The thread goes on for a long time but you can see how far the issue went.

You are going to have a good time! If you get into it more seriously, you can start to look at a gun that suits the class better. For now, you will have fun regardless of what you are shooting.

If you plan to take up IPSC, get registered for the Black Badge Course as soon as possible. They fill up quickly and you need to take it to compete.
