Joined a local range and went there today to put my new SVT-40 through its paces...

I was quite pleased !!

These are my first 10 rounds... at 100 yards, standing, using iron sights only !!

I also filmed myself.

I took my SVT-40 out for the first time (Lever Arms deal). I'm very happy with it. The accuracy is very good, better than expected. Glad I bought it. Should have bought 2.

I checked out your video's. God, if this isn't a typical Canadian outdoor video lol... thanks for sharing and happy shooting my friend.

Yes, quite the typical Canadian outdoor video. LOL

Brought out a couple kinds of hand protection (lined leather gloves and 100% wool mitts) and found the mitts worked the best.

I brought my new SVT-40 to the range myself a few weeks ago to the Brandon range, didn't do anything more than made sure it fired and cycled properly. Too damn cold! Can't wait for it to thaw out so I can properly introduce all my new toys to the range. Good shooting man, especially standing at 100m.

How can you operate the trigger wearing mitts? I had my SVT out in that -40 in December and while I could shoot wearing gloves, I still froze my hands.

see you have some good fun ^^ that incredible how the recoil is on those rifle for the cartridge it shoot ^^

lol you try that at my range you'd have an RSO come running at you from half a mile away screaming the whole time about rules and firing lines and colored flags. Ask me how I know. :)

Manitoba huh? Not too far a drive really. :)

Edit: uh oh, and in the second video you uncased your firearm with the muzzle pointing in the wrong direction....another violation worthy of grandstanding hysterics by the RSO at my range. :)

Bet I know which range this is. Always #####ing about the government, RCMP, CFO etc. but give them an arm band and what good little Nazis they become.

RSO? Selkirk?? LOL!

It's a self-policed range, really. Here's the benches, there's the backstop, rules are posted. Behave yourselves and don't give the executive reason to come looking for you.

It sounds pretty bad in Ontario. I've have been a member at 4 different ranges in Manitoba for about 20 years and have almost never been to the range when another person has been shooting. Range officer? No such thing here

Yeah that's how it was there too until recently. They took some heat from neighbors and cfo and were forced to crack down on the boneheads by having constant supervision. Up until the fall you could stay late on a Sunday or come on a weekday and often have the place to yourself....that's what really makes it hurt, the fond memories! :)

I don't hold it against them really, they're just trying to survive in an environment where most people want them gone. Must get to them sometimes. Plus most RSO's are good, just the odd overzealous one.

Anyway, back to topic, nice vids! :)

Thank you for your constructive criticism.

One thing I should mention is that my behaviour (muzzle direction, etc.) at the range was based on the fact that I was completely alone!! Yes, there was someone at the pistol range but it was impossible for that person to approach me unseen.

After I shot these videos I did realize that I should observe "range rules" even though I am alone as it makes good practice. I am bringing my 9 year-old daughter to the range next week and will make sure we do things safely.

Also, when I am shooting targets with a group, as I have done many times in the past, we all agree on an informal shooting line and all muzzles remain pointed towards the target(s). Also, we have an informal "range office" that keeps an eye out on things.

In closing, I have been a member of a historical interpretation group for the last 10 years and I have been the "corporal" for the last 4. We put alot of emphasis on "muzzle control at all times" as we do drills and shoot our muskets in front of "a live audience".

So... sorry for creating a bit of a buzz but I take it as a learning opportunity to NEVER take things littly when dealing with firearms.

The Selkirk range seems pretty relaxed... the first time I was there was on invitation to shoot our 18th century black powder muskets during a "family day" event and things were pretty cool. I even got to shoot a Mosin Nagant !!

My son and myself love to shoot our SVT40s, they are fantastic shooters, very accurate, little recoil and share the same ammo as your Mosin. What's not to love !!
