I think you can buy a 4.2 barrel for the 586 right from S&W. Why not just get the barrel changed?

I called S&W, they don't make them in 4.2" any more.

Update on this issue:

Went to Al Flaherty's today. Apparently their supplier has them on order. I left a deposit with them, ETA: 60 days. If you're looking for a S&W 586 4.2" Blued version, I suggest you get down to Al Flaherty's and order it now, otherwise you might be SOL for a while. Can't wait

Also check out Dark International. He did one on a 617 that I bought from someone and it looks awesome. Not sure how much he charges though.
