22LR shortage - what's going on?

But since there is no new US made lead, won't recycled lead go up in price also?

no because it will all be brought in from china which is the number 1 lead source in the world.

our sport is uses a very little amount with batteries being the biggest use for lead these days. http://geology.com/usgs/lead/

that being said, i have no doubt that companies will jack the price up claiming all kinds of stuff, but there won't be an actual shortage of lead.

i would stock up if you can, but i'm not running to the store to buy all that they have.

brilliant, and just who uses new lead, that becomes recycled lead?

Its economics 101 dude, if there is no new lead where on earth are you going to get recycled lead from???? picking bullets out of gophers? What are tire balancing weights made from these days?

you just answered your own question, wheel weights used to be made from lead, so where is all that lead going now?

the sky is falling!!!!

no it won't effect anything because ammo company's do not use new lead for bullets, it's all recycled lead for a better price....

Now that there is pure brilliance. Since the supply of lead is drying up, it doesn't matter, as there will be lots of used lead around anyhow, according to your thinking??? And just where does used lead come from? it wouldn't be mined lead would it????

Your sky might be falling, mine isn't. The lead supply is drying up, so prices will increase, and production will decrease. That is just how it works, you don't have to believe it.

Again, another misunderstanding of economics. With the increase use in batteries, and increased demand in lead, a commodity which is getting more expensive to mine, and one that China will now have the corner of the market on.... you think the price will go down? Sorry, economics don't work that way. Prices go down with competition ( more than one mine or one country supplying the raw material) they DONT go down when one country controls the market. So yes the price of lead for bullets, used, recycled or new will GO UP.

I mentioned wheel weights, as they used to be a source of very cheap recycled lead... no longer.... as regulation has priced them out of the market. Regulations are squeezing out lead in North America, new or recycled, and as a result lead for bullets will get more expensive, making lead ammo 1. more expensive or 2. less volume.

Either way a new normal, where you won't be able to go to any hardware, sporting good shop or whatever and buy bulk 22 for the same low price it used to be, and it won't be nearly as available. Not sure why that is so hard to understand.

that i will agree with because that's how the world works, but there is not a shortage of lead... but if you want to keep that tinfoil hat on tight go right ahead.

My LGS's still have good supply of .22LR

Walmart stock is low.
Canadian Tire has good supply of CCI Std Velocity and Winchester DynaPoint. My two favorite flavours.
Been stocking up though just in case.

Don't wait for shortages, buy when you find it and stack it, it doesn't go bad and it never goes down in price.

I don't get the tinfoil hat comment. If you read the news, there is a general shortage of 22 ammo, sure its available in isolated areas but overall its in short supply. Right now its due to hoarding and increase in demand due to new buyers. Since the Liberals in the U.S. have been making attempts to regulate firearms, more people than ever have stepped into the market, and those folks want ammo, and lots of it. So for now the shortage is due to demand, in the not too distant future it will be because of supply shortages of raw materials. Nothing tinfoil about knowing whats actually going on.

Only shortage here is when ct or wal mart gets lazy and doesn't re order... But I always keep lots of variety on hand, but not as much as others... ;)

i'm referring to your comment that the last smelter shutting down is going to stop factories from being able to produce as much ammo. they will have plenty of lead, but prices will get raised and cause more panic buying because people think the world is running out of lead.

if im in a gun store or hardware store I make a habbit of grabbing at least one box. regardless of what I went in for. .22LR and .223

Just going by what 2 manufacturers of 22 ammo are telling me. The food chain will be affected. They are the guys sourcing lead, and know what the supply lines look like. It pays to educate oneself before namecalling.

Well if it's the U.S., Then when Obama goes bouncing down the mall on his A$$ and the Republicans get in, things will go back to normal!
Still Don't understand why they just can't go with a pal/rpal program like us then the investigation is done once, thoroughly, and if you do not screw up, your good for life!
Also I thought by now European and Asian (Chinese) ammo suppliers would pony up and fill in the void!
