Barnes data maximums are all around 2800 fps for the various powders. That seems like maybe it is a bit slow to me. What are you all able to push the 160 TSX to safely? I am currently cooking with IMR 4831

A 7mm Rem has got to be the hardest thing around to guess velocities on. The 2800 fps the Barnes gives is sure to be what they got, and someone will be along shortly that clocks 3200. Speer's manual goes into this in depth, and basically they won't even try to guess.

Not sure what your barrel will do but all my 7s got the best velocity and accuracy with IMR 7828.............I'm tired of getting flamed so I won't even say what I have gotten out of 160s in a 7 Mag.......considerably more than 2800 lets just say, hell my 280 gets more than 2800 with 160s. You might also want to try RL 25 as I have not tried that yet as I currently don't own a 7 Mag, but it works well in my 257 Wby and my 7 RUM, might be too slow for the Rem Mag though.

Just remember that 5% extra muzzle velocity for a given powder automatically means 10% greater maximum pressure!!!
Simply put in numbers: 150fps = 6000 extra PSI! (7 Rem Mag is often loaded at 58,000 PSI)
Some published "known safe" loads are loaded at more than 70,000 PSI and that's how they get the extra velocity.

So 65000PSI, The same as a rum. Don't think that is unsafe by any stretch and 150fps does not automatically mean 6000psi. If that were the case we would all be using the same powder for every cartridge and it wouldn't make much sense to have hundreds of different brands and burn speeds would it? I personally did not start handloading so I could gain 1/4" accuracy at 280 velocities in 7mm. to each his own. Don't listen to me or anyone else with more years reloading than half of the peoples age on this site, but I remember the "old boys" filling cases to the brim, loading a bullet only to fire it in a firearm made with metal not to the strength of todays. Has anyone ever seen a rifle explode with anything but a barrel obstruction? For the op, have a look at the 7wsm velocity and that is made just as easily in the rem considering it has slightly more capacity.

i agree with c-fbmi about his numbers. my 24 inch barreled 280 does better than 2800 with a 160. my 7mag can better 2800 with 175's. i have never owned a 7 mag that doesn't better the manuels safely.

I second this!! I have yet to own a 7mm Rem Mag that would not make 3000+ safely with a 160 grain bullet.

Powders of choice: IMR7828, Reloder22, Norma MRP, AA3100]

I haven't got the greatest speed with IMR4831 in my 7 rem mags and the 160's. I like R22 and it is very easy to get 3000 with it, its just a hard powder to find right now. If you look in enough reloading manuals you will see 3000fps with the 160's listed with a few powders.

7 Rem mag is down loaded quite a bit in factory ammo and some reloading manuals because this cartridge has wider pressure swings than most other cartridges, or so it has been said.

My own 7mm Rem does 3000 fps with a 160 Nosler and 7828. Nosler's book has it at a bit more and Hodgdon's has it at 2860 fps with the same charge of the same powder and a Partition. Which is going to be right?

As per the Alliant Powder guide, 7 Rem mag, 160 Speer SP, Reloader 25, 70 grains 3012 fps.
