Opinions on Nikon Prostaff 5

Did a quick search for info on this scope, pretty bare bones stuff. I'm thinking of using it for longer range shooting, possibly for hunting as well.

Curious what peoples opinions are on these scopes? More specifically the 4.5-18x40SF MATTE MILDOT version. Obviously I'd love to be able to spend more on a quality optic, but current finances preclude me from buying something more expensive.

Went to P&D the other day to check out a Vortex Viper instead and it seemed good, but looking through the Nikon the glass seemed a little clearer (yes I understand looking through a scope inside a store doesn't do it any justice). Also like the idea of the zero stop turrets, and the taller turrets included to switch it out.

Anybody ever used both and can give a comparison, or anyone used the Nikon and able to give testament to its quality and longevity.

I have a regular Prostaff 3-9x40, and it works great. I have a 4.5-18x40NP in the mail from P&D as we speak, should be here end of the week. Most dealers told me it's best bang for the buck, but I've heard in the past their warranty department can be a hassle. Personally I have had no problems with my current Prostaff, and have never dealt with the warranty department. I had a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3-9x40 on a Browning Xbolt in 308 and i found it not near the quality of the Nikon. The Prostaff 5 is going on my savage 12 VLP DBM in 22-250. I'll let you know what i think.
 
If you're familiar at all with our Buckmaster series this is the direct replacement but we've switched them to a 4x eyebox and zero-reset turrets. As far as quality goes they are a hardy robust scope you should enjoy for a long time to come. It is a lifetime warranty, out west our service department is in Richmond, BC and if you should have any issues they'll take care of you.

Is this a new thing? Just wondering because so many people have said that they had issues with Nikon's warranty process. Is this something that is being looked into or has been recently resolved?

Yes, as of July 1st Nikon Canada has started a fully dedicated what we call SRO (Sports and Recreational Optics) division within Canada. I'm one of four that are now 100% SRO and no longer splitting time between the camera world. Along with this has come an overhaul of a lot of our processes and procedures for this division. High on the list was service and warranty.
 
I have half a dozen Nikon Pro Staff and Pro Staff 5 scopes... they are very solidly constructed, bright & clear and the adjustments are smoothly damped... I would consider them a top contender at this price point... I can't comment on the warranty or service as I have never had any problems.
 
I picked one up on boxing day 3.5 x 14 x 40. It is clearer and brighter then my comparable Bushnell's when shot side by side. The one thing I have noticed is at say 12x magnification the Nikon does not seem to be as close as the Bushnell. I have heard about the warranty as well. I hope I never need to find out.

So if you dip or camo the scope yourself warranty is no good? I was contemplating on getting one for a savage 22 target rifle I have but would have to camo it due to the fact the rifle was custom painted.
 
Very impressed with the Prostaff 5. Would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a scope in the under $500 range. Mind you I have only sighted in and run about 20 rounds down the pipe, but I'm happy with the purchase. I also bought the Nikon spot on app, which is a little pricey compared to other apps but works great. Choose USA as your country, I chose Canada at first and there was less than 1/2 the scopes as the USA option, and the Prostaff 5 was also left out. I suppose Nikon must not sell Prostaff 5's in Canada.........lol
 
Will there ever be an AO target-dot Prostaff 5, hopefully to replace the Prostaff EFR 3x9-40?

It'd be awesome to see the bigger eyebox, improved glass, etc, on that sort of scope...

A bit of technical jargon but we're in the process of switching the app from Java to HTML5 on our website and the "french" version is a bit behind so yes the US app is much more up to date. We sell lots of Prostaff 5's in Canada, promise!

At this point that is correct, however it is something I'll look into with our service team to see what the limitations/ exclusions we could honor.

Curious...why did you get charged so much more for the P&F for buying so late in the day?? Do their prices go up after dinner? :p

I've been informed the full warranty will continue with camo dipping, however we would not cover the cost of re-applying in the event of a warranty claim that resulted in a replacement item. Hope that helps out!
