Why do people hate 9mm, were target shooting so not like you need major stopping power.

I have 6 9mm guns nd i hear guys well when u gonna get a real caliber.

I personally dont get it

I don't either. It's normally down to one thing though.

Ego.

"Well my truck has -so- many horsepower!"

"Well I have .50 Cal rifles.... Who cares for you puny .22"

"Buy night force scopes, that's all I use"

Yeah yeah yeah. We get it. Just brush it off man. Enjoy what you enjoy and prefer. Ignore the rest. Life's to short.

Lol trust me it dont bother me, i just dont get it, yes shooting 50AE, 45lc, 454 cassul, 357, 10 i got a bigger grin but thats about it

I love 9mm, if for nothing else, the price... I have an S&W 629 44mag that I almost never shoot. 9mm kills paper just as well as the big guys at less than half the cost.

Putting holes in paper at 5 to 25 meters, the caliber makes no difference, unless you need to compensate for something

Way back when, I shot into 'A' class with a pair of 9mm Brownings. I took a lot flak from the .45 ACP/Jeff Cooper aficionados. For me, it was the logical choice after 12 years in the miitary.
Then I got a deal on a Gold Cup .45 that I couldn't refuse and shot my way back into 'A' after a brief learning curve. It was easier with the .45.

Last April my wife took her Black Badge course with a Ruger SR9. After that, she tried one of my 1911's. I created a monster! She now owns THREE 1911's and a GSG 1911 .22. Her SR9 and six mags (and remaining factory ammo) are now for sale.

Even with her small hands, she finds the 1911 easier to handle and shoots the 1911 both better and faster than she did the 9mm. It's kept me busy tricking them out with the bells, gongs and whistles (ambi-safeties, right side mag releases for a lefty), but it's worth it to have a gun nut wife.
.

So, by your "just shooting paper" hypothesis I should just be shooting 22lr? Or even a pellet gun?

It's only paper.

I think if I throw a rock hard enough I can get it through the paper...
I get what you're trying to say here but you went a little too far. Let's compare a pistol that comes in various calibers (leave the rimfire out of this), so for arguments sake a G17, G22 and G21 which are 9mm, 40 and 45 respectively. Then between those there is no distinct advantage from a paper punching point of view for choosing one over the other based on their "just shooting paper" performance. Many, myself included would rather the 9mm for reduced cost of ammo if nothing else. Let's make this comparison apples to apples not bullets to rocks.

9mm, 40cal and 45 don't matter. I've seen trauma presentations done by anesthetists on modern handgun ballistics in the human medium. neither of those calibers actually kill very well. 6 out of 7 people hit by handguns survive being shot to make it to the OR, even multiple times unless you hit them in the head or are using a monster caliber revolver. you want them dead, use a rifle or shotgun with appropriate ammo types. you want to kill paper, use whatever strikes your fancy and doesn't cost too much. anyone whos interested I can send a youtube link to a 40 min presentation to watch. Its American but still relevant.

I tried it and just do not like it. Has nothing to do with ego for me. Seems like the main reason every one likes it is its CHEEP !!! Well you know what is even cheeper then 9mm .22lr. Even reloading .40 and .45 is much cheeper then 9mm factory loads. I just find 40 more fun. 9mm is like .22 not very challenging to make good groups.

It does have its strong points though. Not every one wants to shoot something with some kick all the time most of my friends get tired of .357 mag .45 and .40 but will shoot the crap out of the .22 all day. It is nice to have a lower power gun when at the range with girls who have never shot before or very little keeps them not wanting to leave so quick and give it a chance. I can just make light .40 loads for them and .40 loads that hit like a .45 for me.

This is a very very old topic on boards north south east and west. BTW I'll toss in the fact that very few experts who prefer 45 ever
really came down hard on 9. I've got 9's , 45's, 357's + blah, blah, blah and I love 9mm. 40 and 45 in full size guns hardly kick much more than 9
Stopping power? I won't get sucked into that discussion. I'm no Massad Ayoob or Chuck Taylor so I'll leave it to them to pick apart the Fackler, Marshall study's etc.
re stopping power. There are many resources online ie Chuck Hawks or you can try to pick up Taylors "Combat Handgunnery" 4th edition for his spin.
