A good starting .22 from Bass Pro?

Hey all,

I have a gift card for Bass Pro that I was given and figured I might put it towards a 22. I realize their selection might not be the best but I would like to use this gift card. I am still just getting into the sport so that's why I would like to start with a 22.

So based on their selection what would everyone suggest for a starter 22? I would like to keep it in the $200-$300 range and I am leaning towards a bolt action to get started with.

Thanks all for the replies. So it seems to be between the Marlin XT-22 and the Savage MK II. I imagine I will have to handle both of them and see which one feels right.

Thanks again for all the input. If anyone else has anymore input about either of these rifles please post your thoughts.
 
I would look at the MKII FV as well as it has the heavy barrel. If you can increase your budget, the BTVS is the nicest one on that page in my opinion...
 
At your budget. either the Marlin or Savage. Depends on which one feels better in your hands/shouldered. Keep in mind if you're sticking with the irons or scoping it as that will change the "feel". A Simmons Magnum fixed 4x or 3-9x scope should keep you in your budget. Then you need to decide if you want a synthetic or wood stock.

My Marlin 981T (tube feed) has been one of my favs to shoot over the years. Other rifles(some costly) have come an gone but this one's sticking around (cost me ~ $230 scoped). The micro-groove med-weight bbls are pretty accurate.

Another option might be the Norinco NS522. Check out the currently running thread on it and the little tuning improvements that are happening.

Along with that rifle if you're keen on a scope I see that they have the Nikon P223AR scopes for good prices. I've got a 3x9 Simmons on my own Savage. It's great for out to 100. But I want to play with lobbing them out to 200 and learn to read and compensate for wind. For that application the 4-12x would be better. And it's on sale for just $200.

In that case I suspect you'll be happy with either one. I do know that the Savage has 10 round mags available. If the Marlin doesn't then I'd say that could be a decision maker right there.

I also tend to have a liking for Savage rimfire guns. The Accutrigger can be set really well and the guns seem to generate a great level of accuracy for the price.

I have a Marlin XT-22 with the tube mag, which I like because I can fire 22 shorts. Fits like 20 of 'em in there!
