Ukrainian Leather Slings, question about quality....

someone post a link, let's see these things or where you can get them.

BTW, as to making leather out of people, if the question had of been about buying slings from folks of Jewish descent I think you could understand the reason why some folks wouldn't find the comments funny.

OK, I am obviously missing some history trivia, could someone please fill me in on the human leather thing, cause I ain't never heard of it before.

Sorry OP I just have to ask............not meant to derail, BUM started this nonsense..........

Hard to tell just from photos, but a lot of those straps seem to be sized for the smaller Euro loops...3/4-inch, I think? If so, they don't really look right on our traditional 1-inch sling loops. They photos also seem to show a lot of potentially stock-scratching hardware.

They have both the narrow (0.8") loops, and the NA style 1" loops, and tons of different styles if you're worried about stock scratching hardware. The old "GI Styel" slings (which I use on most of my long guns) suffer from the same problem - which I generally solve by wrapping the fasteners with a leather or cloth loop once I have the length set where I want it.

Anyway, don't want to sound like I'm endorsing them. I have one on order, and will give it the once over when it shows up in the mail in a couple weeks. For the price, I'm willing to take a risk.

NP c-fbmi, fair question.

The Goose-Steppers were known to make leather products from human skin, including bible covers. So, you know, considering a lot of Ukrainians ended up at the camps, the human-skin-leather cracks made by earlier posters could fairly reasonably be assumed to be offensive.

You know, many books over the years have been bound in human skin, but to my knowledge the bit about the Nazis is propaganda/myth, why their crimes need to be embellished is beyond me.

Well, who knows for sure? The evidence is fairly solid on Stuuthof Concentration Camp engaging in small scale production of soap from human fat - and then using it to clean up after performing autopsies on experimental subjects. They also made buttons out of the bones - again, that's fairly well established.

The "human skin for leather lampshades and book leather" largely comes from the trials around Ilse Koch - which is where things get murky. Ilse was pretty far out there in wacko land, by any standard, and was even at one point arrested (along with her Husband, who was the Commandant and Buchnewald) by the Nazi's themselves because, by all accounts, things had gotten pretty far out of hand even by their standards.

The history of whether or not it happened is completely up for debate, by respectable historians who've argued it both ways. It wasn't a mass production thing, if it happened at all.

Either way, referencing leather made from human skin is pretty dodgy stuff to bring up in some circles.

As per above/below, that's basically it. You've heard of melting down gold teeth, I've heard stories of them melting down body fat for soap or candles and stuff from skin as well. Creepy stuff that most folks have better taste then to joke about, but we're giving this thread a major U turn, back to the leather, they look pretty good on ebay, I may consider one if I find something to suit my style, I would recommend other folks to have a look.

I ordered one of the slings that looked nice (in the eye of this beholder)... $21.50 after currency conversion from us$, all in. I saw some of those ammo holders/cheekrests, and they're definitely on "the list" form down the road...

Looking on ebay at the same dealer, now they are called " russian federation" I believe instead of ukranian leather, interesting times...

I checked out some 3/4" Russian Federation slings for a Euro rifle I have here. They were 1/2 price the American equivalent and 1/4 cost for shipping.
