Browning BAR-22 & BPR-22

Hi all,

Just wondering how many folk surfing this section own a Browning BAR-22 or BPR-22 and what are your impressions (accuracy, reliability, etc.) of them? I remembered seeing them is older magazines as a kid and just recently had the opportunity to pick up both models up, although my BPR-22 is actually chambered for .22 WMR. I haven't got around to shooting either one yet...hopefully the weather gets warmer soon. The old Bushnell "Twenty-Two" scopes I have on them are the perfectly proportioned for .22s, as to not make them look weird in any way. Too bad they are no longer produced, the mount system is probably the most ingenious, simple and heavy duty as far as dovetail mounts go. Feel free to add pics of your Browning .22s as well.

Very nice I would be intrested in the 22win mag if you decide to part with one of them .my buddy had one years ago and I kind of fell in love with it. Dutch
 
Beautiful pair of guns... I have looked for a BAR-22 for years, no luck yet... as far as the scopes go, they may look proportionate, but they are seriously crappy mechanically and optically... I had a few of them way back in the day, when they were being produced... there are a few good, inexpensive, low profile scope options available.
 
I also have a set of Bar + Bpr both 22lr. The Bar is in very good condition and the Bpr has some hunting dings. Solid machines, nice wood, fun to shoot. I do need an ejector/firing pin for the pump. Western gun parts has been promising it for 2 years now :(

Took me long enough to find this one so I doubt I'll sell it anytime soon! LOL!

I've had one these "Twenty-Two" scopes on my Winchester Model 61 .22 WMR for quite some time now and the one the old man has on his BL-22 has seen over 355 000rds of use since 1973. As far as the optics quality they suit my needs for .22 scopes and the extra fine crosshair is also something I really enjoy on these older scopes. Realistically, you find the ammo the rifle prefers, sight it in and never touch it again...unless it gets knocked, dropped or you can't locate said ammo any longer. So, if there's no real need to be messing with the dials after initial sight-in and there's no recoil to shoot them loose, mechanically speaking, I don't see any area of concern.

Ok... how about the half dozen that crapped out on me? The integral mounts were fine, but I had four that fogged so badly they took days to purge... the lenses fell out of two, and two of the 3-7's had the adjustment rings strip... AND, I take care of my equipment, none were exposed to rough use.

They were a budget (low end) product when they were brought to market... I dont think the 25-30 years since have improved them any.. but if they are working for you, that's great... I think your nice guns deserve better.

Are we talking about the same scopes? The three I have here in front of me have the lens sandwiched between threaded rings of aluminium that are loctited into place so I fail to see how the lens could fall out in any way. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they are top quality items but compared to the about 90% of the compact .22 specific scopes sold today, for under $50, they aren't all that bad. I'm a little intrigued now! LOL!
