What Chrony?

I own 5 chronographs and let me tell you Chronys are garbage, I had a 200 fps difference from one evening to the next with the same load but different lighting conditions.........junk!!! I have 2 Oehler model 35 Ps and they give me identical readings regardless of light and shooting them side by side or in tandem. A cheap chronograph is a waste of money and tells you absolutely nothing!!!

Is it possible that the chrony actually read right because when the light changed you shot a different cartridge than before the light changed?
Also, please explain to me how do you get identical readings with the Oehlers placed side by side? I think you're exaggerating a bit to justify the pricier toys you got.

I don't understand your question...........I shot the same loads from the same rifle (52 gn 22-250) on two consecutive evenings with clear skies and overcast skies and got 200 fps difference in readings with the Chrony. I set up two different Oehler mod 35Ps and fired the same loads through them from two different benches on the same night and got the same velocities within 10 fps. I don't understand what you don't understand about my post. The Oehler give me precise readings regardless of lighting conditions or they show an error..........you get what you pay for with chronographs !!! I have fired many different loads through my Oehlers with many different lighting conditions and the velocities are always right where I expect them given the load and cartridge.

Well, I once did a comparison test with my basic Chrony and an Oehler. I put one in front of the other and recorded the results then switched them back to front. Whichever instrument was downrange read a few feet per second slower, as it should. But what this indicated that for all measurable difference, they gave pretty much identical results.

I have also never noticed results from the Chrony that were significantly beyond expectation. I've no idea why your chrony seemed to be reading off by 200 fps but I suspect there is an explanation.

I don't need anything fancy, just accurate. Does anyone have a recommendation on a cheaper one that works?

I had a basic F1 but now have a model with a remote read out and stored strings of data. I appreciate not having to squint at the screen or write down readings. Its not much more than a basic model.

I don't doubt your findings, but take them out 5 different times with clear skies, light overcast, heavily filtered light and heavy overcast and try your experiment again. I think you will experience the same inconsistencies as I did, even just the changing light as the evening wears on changes the Chrony significantly. JME...YMMV..

Sir, I don't have to justify my pricey toys to anyone.............I answered a question with the experience I have had with Chronys and Oehlers............
Now this is a pricey toy............nevermind the two Oehler 35Ps.............

Sorry guys, I just couldn't resist...................

I bought a basic shooting chrony and I'll second that it was a peice of junk. I uped my anti and spend the $320 on a really nice CED M2 and the results are much more dependable. Not only is a poor chrony frustrating, time consuming, and unreliable, but you will spend the difference in the ammo wasted shooting downrange which is really irritating if you are trying to do ladder testing and need results to be accurate and dependable since you might only have a groups of 5 for each charge.

Take C-FBMI's advice and buy once, cry once.

...or read the manual and act accordingly...

So, you experienced a 200 fps between 2 rounds shot 1 day apart.
And you compare this with shooting 2 rounds seconds apart.
And you can't see the difference!?

Let me tell you, your scientific method lacks substance.

get one with a remote. I wish I had done that. you will have to place the chrony on a tripod something like 10 feet from the rifle, or you will blow the sticker off the chrony, and blow the chrony off the table(guess why I know?)
placing the chrony 2 feet away from a 300 win mag with a brake is not a good idea. And getting up to read each shot kind of sucks. so get a remote. (I will stick to binos I guess)

If you have a PC based laptop, you can make your own remote using a USB RS232 TTL adapter and Chrono Connect. If anyone is interested, I have 2, maybe 3 spare USB RS232 TTL adapters.

Pro Chrono Digital has worked real well for me. Isn't too sensitive to light conditions.

X2

Used it from .177 pellets on up, indoors with the light screens and outside, and being able to use a second hand laptop as remote and data storage is great.
Only wish my notebook would work with the software to save some weight.
