My new GP100

Ruger is a budget firearm, my expectations with them are pretty low to start with. They cast everything they can, cut corners on finishing where the can, use the cheapest possible materials and production techniques possible. They are not bad firearms, just on the lower end of the quality scale.

and yet the reason i purchased a ruger is because i've heard they are as accurate as a 686 any day of the week, and are tough as nails. every article on the gp100 praises it. i'll reserve judgement of course until i fire mine, but this revolvers reputation is seemingly excellent.

The GP100 is an excellent gun. I own two because I love them that much. They are built like tanks, accurate as all hell. Mine are both excellent out of the box.

In all fairness their trigger is the weak point. New springs improve it, but the length of trigger pull, and the hammer lock time can't be fixed and are nowhere near the triggers on smith and wessons. Smiths are just "tighter".

That said, all companies QC sucks unless you go custom and expensive. That is where the ruger shines. It is the best value in .357 by far. Great buys.

A quick Google search revealed that this transfer bar rattle is quite common, not only among Rugers and GP-100s, but many others as well. Doing more research into this has my mind resting a little easier as well.

Along the way I also discovered that Zombies don't actually "hear", so a little rattle in a rock-solid, accurate wheel gun is fine in my book.

Stokesey, I feel your pain.

I've bought and used Rugers for over 2 decades.

The last 2 years, I've purchased 3 brand new pistols with little annoying defects like yours.

My most recent was my SP101 .22lr.

Straight out of the box, it had scratches going against the satin grains.

The grooves on the barrel top strap were uneven.

And lots of machine marks on the firing pin face.

I miss Ruger of the past....ho hum.

Unless you have an OCD about that nick and can't get past it, then I'd just shoot it. If that gun shoots more accurate than anything you tried you will soon get over any imperfections.

I have an older S&W revolver that looks like somebody spilled chemicals on it in spots. Bluing is gone from there. For a factory revolver it shoots more accurate than any I've tried in 30+ plus years and I'll never sell it.

I'm guessing it was mailed to you? Always inspect before walking out of the shop or shooting if it was mailed to you - easier to return or exchange. You don't know how a gun is handled by whom in a store - guns are greasy, shoppers wearing rings.. etc. Now it's gonna cost someone shipping to fix. The shop should have inspected before shipping, or if they knew about dent, offer you some money back if you wanna keep it.

It was mailed to me, I can't see this was sat around at the dealer or even handled prior to shipping. They were advertised and all sold within 24 hours or so (hence why I can't get a replacement). I guess I am a bit OCD, don't get me wrong I shoot my guns but I also look after them well. I've certainly never put any dents in my other guns so to receive a new gun with a dent (albeit a small one) in my eyes is unacceptable.

I purchased an NEA in the days when the finish was not the best (numerous tool marks), it bothered me every time I picked it up, I've since swapped it for a Spike's Tactical. I get it that it wouldn't bother some people, to each their own.

I've been doing a bit of digging around and can't believe the price variation of the GP100, they're ranging from $675 (Wolverine) to $829 (General Gun), other dealers have them at prices in between.

@Stokesey, I don't think you're being unreasonably upset or obsessive, I'd be pissed too! It almost looks like someone put the blade of a screwdriver under the sight and tried to pry it up and out, deforming the base metal underneath.

Yes, it's a gun, yes, it's meant to get dirty, yes it's going to get scratched, but this equates to buying a brand new 1911 and when it arrives, finding that there's an idiot scratch in the frame from assembling the slide stop lever. This in my mind is unacceptable, if any idiot is going to damage my gun, it had better be this idiot! {me, the owner}.

Pics to the distributor and the manufacturer asap. This damage didn't happen through the mail.

Wolverine have been 100%, it's on its way back to them now, I'm gutted as I REALLY want a GP100, but want a mint one... Good thing is the supply seems to be getting better, that said I refuse to pay $800+ like some dealers are asking! I'll wait for Wolverine or P&D to get more stock as they are by far the best price.

As for the dent, it can't possibly be from front sight install/removal as there's a spring loaded pin above the muzzle to remove the sight, also there's not a mark on the front sight post.

Return is always an option when buying sight unseen.

I wonder if we will seen a thread in the future about this gun being a tack driving laser beam..... :)

Ruger is not top shelf in the finish dept these days that's for sure!

The nice thing with a stainless model is that if you detune any sharp edges, and smooth out the imperfections, you don't need to refinish the gun beyond blending the brushed finish.

Stokesey,

Be sure to let us all know when you get the new one if it has the TB rattle as well. I'd love to know if this is as common as reading about it on the web would make it seem.....

Will do, sounds to me it's a common occurrence but not on every one. Don't think that'd bother me to be honest?

I just assumed they all rattled if you shake them hard enough.
The transfer bar is loose by design.

It's never bothered me as I don't often shake my revolvers.

Wolverine has 2 more in stock, up from $675 to $780!! I've managed to get another one for $699 at delselins, I asked them to thoroughly check it before I transferred money across, they've assured me it's fine, fingers crossed!!

And here she is, 3rd time lucky! This also has the transfer bar rattle but I'm not in the slightest bit concerned about that.
