Im fairly new to shooting and I have maxed out what I can see and shoot with my 22lr with a 3-9x40. And have recently bought a savage in .223 and was looking for a scope at a decent price that will let me reach 300 yards comfortably.. I tried getting the swfa ss yet they dont do canada. Can someone help me get a good pound for pound scope

For your requirements a Redfield 4-12 would do nicely and not break the bank at all.

You could also look at Nikon, Vortex , some of the Bushnells , Sightron SII's.

Depending on your intended target your choice of reticles may come into play.A finer reticle may be desired for target but a regular one may be sufficient for game.

Under $500 Bushnell is about it... Their Elite Tactical series is often brought up when talking budget optics. Personally I have not had very good luck with them though....

Vortex Viper series is another option with a good warranty and many good reviews, that borders on your budget with many scopes.

Personally I would look to spend a little more....

I have cheaped out on optics enough times, to know better at this point, and a lack of confidence in your otic set up isn't worth saving a couple hundred bucks. You will lose more when you want to sell that cheaper scope, and upgrade it later anyways...

I have settled on Sightron as the best bang for the buck in a rifle scope, with the SII Big Sky series being the ultimate bargain in optics. You can get several options under $700, and you won't be disappointed. Hirsch Precision or Mystic Precision are a couple great dealers, and sponsors to deal with.

I'm not a drinker of the vortex koolaid yet, but the 6.5-20 x 50 viper on my .223 is pretty darn decent and not much over your price range new. If used is an option for you, then keep your eye open in the EE and you could be well within budget.

When I went cheap, I went with a Falcon Mencae 4-14x44 FFP from Frontier Firearms. It was a beginner scope, and worth every penny. Upgraded about a year ago to a Sightron. Still, if you don't have a ton of cash, I would recommend it. Comes in MOA or MRAD. Good glass for the price, FFP was fun, even though the crosshairs area little thick. Held well and actually tracked pretty well!

I second the Viper series. Great quality optic.

How about a Leupold VX-2 4-12x 50mm? It is on sale at IRunGuns.com for $501.

Pretty much the same route I went...FM 4.5-18x56 then up to a Sightron...

both guys who bought the falcon menace and upgraded to the Sightron, are out the price of the FM. Go straight to the Sightron and save some money, the best value right now is the Leupold at IRG that was posted here

Not quite...I still have the FM and it's on a beginner R700 that I let others use...works great...I still think for the price it's pretty good. Its not like I'm trying to push out to a 1000m with it.

Exactly the same for me (well, sightron is on a 700, fm went to another rifle).

The OP asked for a LR scope under a certain cost. I tried to give a suggestion that for his request, rather than making this YET ANOTHER thread that ends up just telling to OP to up his bankroll.

To those that say just get a Sightron or a higher end Vortex or Bushnell, good suggestions, but not really within the price point.

OP, if/when you decide to sell, you can likely resell the starter scope!(though I would bet that you'll end up just buying another rifle to out it on!)

There’s nothing wrong with Bushnell Tactical scopes for under 1K and most others scopes pending on your eyesight, with a visit to an Optician. You may want to go with a higher power with a larger diameter lens with vision in mine and most sales persons will let you see through it up close. Keep in mind some of the high priced yuppie scopes pop, just the same, as the higher volume manufactured lower priced scopes do and both accomplish the same job.

I just ordered the viper 6.5-20x50 good advice guys spend a little more and I dont have to buy twice. She was 630 with tax and shipping so need to much over my ideal price.

That's a very good choice, its pretty much the sweet spot for magnification and performance per dollar. Viper is where its at, also you will love its sun flare suppression. The eyepiece has very little reflection to distract your eye.. top notch performance for under a grand. One of my favorite features; the turrets. Ended up being a selling feature for my 3-9 viper.

I just picked up and mounted a Redfield "BattleZone" 6 - 18 x 44 for $ 344.00. Comes with a 1/4 min turret installed but also comes with a .223 turret and a .308 turret. It had a 1" tube and has their "Tac Moa" cross hair.

Very nice clear optic, front parallax adjustment and looks correct on my Savage .223 in the MDT, LSS stock.
