Ok, so I'm living overseas right now, and will be for the next year or so. At first I wanted to buy an AR-15 with my bonus check, but have recently decided to travel a bit with that money instead. So, SKS! Cheap, effective, real cheap (did I say that already?) and moderately modifiable. My question is: should I purchase one soon (since I know they're cheap and plentiful right now) and have a buddy pick it up/ store it with my other firearms, or should I wait until I get home with the uncertainty in availability/cost increase. I know no one can predict the future, but maybe someone can help based on their experience, as well as some trends.
I put it to you, CGN, in helping me to make an educated decision.

Their prices have been fairly consistent over the years. If you find a deal on one via a sale, and your friend has their PAL, then go for it. Otherwise I wouldn't sweat it.

Its probably the best bang for the buck as far as rifles and ammo prices go. I'm not sure that I would ever compare an AR to an SKS, they are simply not the same in any regards. An SKS works best when left as issued. If you have a bunch of money to throw into a rifle, then get the rifle you want. An SKS shoots 4-6 MOA and any mods are merely lipstick on a pig. You can dump a thousand bucks into an SKS and it will still shoot 4-6 moa, or you made it worse.

I love the SKS and take one to the range with me every time I go, but if you want something different, then get something different.

The sks is definitely fun to modify into a poor mans m4 (as I've done with mine). I've put about 600$ into it for fun. I was expecting accuracy improvement with the money, simply looks and functionality. As for prices, unless there is some big drastic change in relations with china and Russia, they will likely stay status quo for a while.

Fair enough guys, thanks. Definitely not comparing the SKS to the AR; just looking for a caliber upgrade from my current Ruger 10/22 and the SKS is more in my price bracket right now. I want to keep it stock as, I want to get better at iron site shooting at longer ranges. Ah but a man can dream, I'll get that AR someday...someday...

It's a common misconception that SKS ownership is cheap, FALSE! Individual SKS ownership is, but who buys only one?

I would buy now, there's are some really nice refurbs being dealt right now. I was looking through the latest one at my local gun store (rouge river arms) and they are all in really nice condition .. Mostly mismatched but all with welded followers instead of franken pins. When I bought my last 2 all I could find was franken pin so it might be a good time to get one if the franken pin bothers you

Got some bad news for you mate, that's your poor marksmanship that is responsible for 6 moa out of an sks, decent shooters can get 3-4.

I have one or two sks that can shoot 2 inches, half a dozen I can get 3 or 4 inch groups, and many more that can shoot 5 or 6 inch groups. I shoot several times per week, there is nothing wrong with my eyes.

My SKS would be about as effective as a club then a firearm. I will never invest more than .06/round surplus ammo into it.

Marstar, $400 for a Chinese SKS action, ATI strike force stock, tri rail, and rubber coated NC Star scope.

All the bubba tactical you what, cheap price, and a ton of fun. Good grief, if all you want is a fun, cheap to shoot tactical rifle, that's it.
