I'm watching the walking dead which has got me thinking, would a deer skull stand up to a head shot and to what caliber at what distance? Would a knife work to puncture a skull, it seems pretty effort less in the movies

If you ever worked in a feeding station and see a deer with his jaw shot out because of a bad shot, you will never want to shoot one in the head. Very unethical. Place your round in the boiler room

I've never shot an animal and if I were to do so it would be a lung/chest shot. This is entirely hypothetical, say an injured deer was stuck in a well and only his head was visible...

We shoot cattle in the head all the time when butchering on the farm, and their skulls are way thicker than a deer. If you are close enough that you can make a head shot, it isn't a big deal. Plenty of deer are gut shot and left to die a slow death too.

I shot a big doe last year in the head at 20 yards with a 243, 95gr accubond. It worked very well.

Never tried stabbing anything in the head but I would think it would be tougher than they show on TV.

The only time I've used a head shot on deer is to finish one off. Soft points tend to make a mess, so I now carry a couple of solids in my pocket just in case. I think a knife would only work in the movies. Don't forget, the bucks carry a half-dozen spears on top of their heads themselves, and trying to poke something sharp through their skulls might provoke a reaction.

.357 Magnum at 5 feet will do it, so will .38 special at the same distance. Never tried a knife, mainly because live animals can be unpredictable and with the horns, will I know that a white tail deer horn can go right through your bicep without much trouble so I tend to keep some distance

Finishing shoot 20y 308 125gr nosler bt hit just below the left antler, side of the head, blew the right antler clean off, 3 point white tale. My uncle saw the hit and watched the antler go flying off.

All I know is they don't stand up to a 270 Win at 50 yards or a 54 Hawken at ten. Shoot em in the boiler unless presented with a really, really good opportunity. Or they surprise you at ten yards on your first muzzle loader hunt when you're 19 and you accidentally shoot them in the head.......oops.

I used to work on a deer farm and shot literally hundreds of deer in the head with a .243.
With a 100 gr bullet they rarely exited, but that was Red deer and their skull is pretty substantial. I have skinned out skulls and there's no way you're sticking a knife through it, unless it's a very high quality knife.

A knife won't go threw a skull with out a hammer.
Just go and try to stab thrw 3/4" plywood and see why happens.

I won't take a head shot. Seen a guy track a moose that he shot the nose off. 2days later and moose

Just hit the lungs and relax. Never failed me yet.

Do not take your shot placement or hunting skills notes from Hollywood or the Walking Dead in particular.

While I have taken head and high neck shots and will again if the scenarios that called for them are repeated I much prefer to put a bullet through the bottom half of a game animals chest immediately behind the shoulder.

OK... to recap... you are watching a zombie show on TV, you don't hunt, have never shot an animal and you are wondering if you can stab a deer through the head or shoot it through the head and kill it possibly while injured and stuck down a well......

My answer to you is "porcupine".... makes about as much sense as your thread does.....
