3 Gun Shotgun

If you want max volume what about SBE II instead of M2? 3.5" over 3"

7 in mag, float 1, pipe 1.

This, but, get it with the 24" barrel. Unfortuantley, no one seems to bring these in.

I've been going through this painstaking search for a few weeks now, and, I think hands down, the ultimate Canadian 3 Gun shotgun is the Super Black Eagle 2, 24". Toss a suitable magazine tube extension on their, and you're gold.

You may notice that Berretta offers that 1301 in two configurations. 21" with the 5 round tube, or, the 24" model with 10 round capacity.

The SBE2 is hands down the best route. Finding one, then coughing up the dough seems to be the issue.

I'll probably settle on a 26" Versamax sportsman for 1/2 the price, and just swing a bigger di..er...barrel.

I'm certainly no expert but I do think I got a lot of gun out of the box with my Versa Max tactical. Then I spent a few $$ for mods to improve it including a "welded up" lifter and a machined loading port to make reloads easier. I also got the bolt lightened and some fine tuning done. Mine loads 6 + 1 of 2-3/4 shells and another ghosted.

Many buy the 26 inch VM and then do the mods as it will give you + 1 capacity because the chamber is marked for 3-1/2 ammo. I added a +2 extender to give me 10 + 1 as I shoot in the US where capacity rules differ. In Canada the +2 comes off and a plug goes in so I'm legal.

The VMT is as fast as I need, totally reliable so far and a "soft shooter". It's very popular here in Texas for the games. If you are in a hurry to play without mods, $1250 does it.

Too late for me to go back!

But I am fairly certain my M2 would be pretty fast :)

An interesting note, the safeties between the Fabarm and Benelli interchange.

I had no idea what to do with the stock safety from the Benelli and while I had the Fabarm apart, I noticed the profiles were almost identical!. In it went.

A better picture incase anyone was wondering:

I've added a new TTI bolt release (which is much better) and a TTI extended safety, mucho nice when clicking it off.

At the CDTSA matches, I've used both a Hatsan MarineGuard Escort with a 20" bbl and 7 rnd capacity, and a Dominion Arms Grizzly with an 18.5" bbl, pistol grip folding stock and 5 rnd magazines.

I found I was faster with the Grizzly because I can swap magazines a lot faster than I can reload a tube mag.

YMMV

I think I am taking the plunge into frustration, but I picked up a Mossberg 935 Turkey gun with 24" barrel. No it will not cycle light 2 3/4 shells but will cycle slightly heavier ones. Time to get re loading again. The one thing I did not know is that it is not recommended to shoot slugs due to the barrel being overbored. Drats. I think if I play with the return spring or the gas system, I can overcome the first problem, but not sure what to do about slugs. It would be nice if a 930 barrel would interchange. Gotta really think this through.

I bought a SBE I barrel of the EE $350. Then got it cut down to 19 and rethreaded for chokes $150. TacStar tube.

A bit of $, but it's a good set-up and it's what I wanted.

Ok. No use beating my head against the wall. The Mossberg 935 could work but too many issues. Great hunting gun though. So I got a SBE II with 26" barrel. I already welded on the bolt to be able to ghost load if the stage allows. It is the smoothest cycling action of the 3.5 inchers. Next is a mag tube extension, and some welding of the carrier. The forks don't bother me that much but the middle slot in the carrier shreds my thumbnail. First the slot then see if the forks need doing. So far this is a very fun and rewarding project. SBE's made after the 90's won't ghost load without the modification.

No doubt, the high round cap is a nice touch.

So since 00buck bumped this thread, has there been a decision made on what to get yet? :)

No decision yet! I came close to pulling the trigger on a Fabarm SAT-8, but I'm not sold yet. I like the idea of being able to use my Fabarm stock adapter and through the magpul SGA on there, but don't like the idea of ghost ring sights on a 3-gun semi.

Can you tell me a little about your 3-gun edition? Where'd it come from, how much did it cost you? Wanna sell it to me? ;)

I actually took Ms TVPP's little Hatsan out on the weekend and shot some clays with it. I can definitely see the value in a single fiber optic sight:

Get a versamax with a 22" barrel. I did, and it's awesome.

Perfect length, balance. And I'm happy with the capacity.

For 3gun it's perfect. A lot of guys are stressing over 8 or 9, but, as far as I'm concerned, your only competitive if your loading in pairs or quads, so, if your magazine only holds 6 or 7, your still only stuffing a maximum of 6 shells in with a practiced reload method.

It all comes down to the reloads, and, that 3 1/2" loading port is awful nice....

The versmax 22" is that the tactical or the regular synthetic model?
do I understand you guys right

Versmax tactcal holds 6 rnds of 2-3/4 + 1 in the chamber and 1 ghost load
versmax reg / synthetic holds 7 rnds of 2-3/4 + 1 in the chamber and 1 ghost load?

I've got a sportsman with the tactical barrel. I caved and bought it off the EE. I'm pretty sure Cbabes is running around with the other mixed half of my gun.

I like the 22" though. It seems as though 26" isn't going to be an issue, and it's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to shorten one up.

For me though, I can start with 8 in the gun if the stage allows it, and them I've decided to go with a load two system.

I too got the VMT 22. One of the advantages is that it comes out of the box with most of the so called "tactical" components and then the cost of upgrading it to a "full race" gun is less. I shoot more in the US than I do in Canada so while here I use a +2 extender to max out the capacity and then replace that with a plug so that I'm Canadian legal when I get back to Canada.

Most shooters where I am have bought the 26 inch model but then have more to do to bring it to 3Gun standard. The only difference other than barrel length when all is done is the colour of the stock.

The best buy will be the new tactical when it becomes available as it will be complete with the more expensive mods like the lifter and enlarged port.

I agree with you about the ghost ring sights. I found it to be abit slower and the sight picture a little "cluttered" and eventually started "point shooting" with the damn things.

Ah, the Benelli M2 3-Gun edition.

This is a story in itself.

Two and a half years ago, I contacted Clay from Prophet River to inquire about the possibility of acquiring a 3-Gun edition. He said yes, but there is a huuuuge wait list, if memory serves me correctly, for about $2600 CDN tax, ship, fees all in (roughly)

Benelli claims the following:

Shorter barrel 21 inches long, which is almost exactly the length of an eight-shot magazine tube with a Teflon-coated follower (this was removed by the US based FFL for some reason and was not included, working on getting it included as the price says it should come with one) I really want that magazine extension because it makes speed loading MUCH easier. Fighting against a longer spring is always easier than the shorter one!.
It uses Crio chokes, like other M2s.
trigger job
enlarged, flanged loading port
HIVIZ fiber optic front sight, and comes with extra parts to change out the color and diameter of the light pipe.
Nordic Components magazine extension
Nordic Components enlarged bolt release button
It’s 42½ inches long, weighs 7.1 pounds, and has all-synthetic furniture.

Though they claim the work is done "in house" it is actually farmed out to Benny Hill of Triangle Shooting sports. It has the bolt mods (OOB, Ghost load) included as well all wrapped with a factory warranty.

If you're looking at getting something special like an Accurate Iron Works tuned Benelli like many competitors out there, you are out of luck as Mike has no interest in dealing with Canadians. None, Zero, Zilch.

You will have better luck calling Taran Butler and getting him to build you one since he designed the Salient Arms Benelli when he was with them and is MUCH more pleasant to deal with. A true gentleman and one of my personal heros.

The shotgun itself:

The trigger is very good, there is no takeup, but a touch of creep before hitting the break. I hope this will work itself out.
Enlarged port is nice, but I might want to open this up more.
Lighter than my 930 SPX despite being a 21" barrel (I am guessing this is because of the lack of a magazine tube)

I replaced a few things as you can tell because I had so much idle time before getting it (springs, bolt, safety, magazine release) I did not like the circular bolt release, the TTI one allows me to get two fingers on it for a positive release without being intrusive. I replaced the safety as well with a TTI sourced part as the "off" side is much more pronounced and easier to get at (strangely enough, since I had both guns on my bench apart, I decided to see if the stock benelli safety would fit in my Fabarms 14" pump and it does!, the triangle is easier to hit than the round factory piece)

Alot of shotgunners stateside are installing "flip up rear sights" in the rear most part of the sight rib for long range accuracy with slugs. They have a smithy dovetail one in. For me, maybe later as I like the simplicity of the sightrib and FO front sight.

The only thing of concern is the gel buttpad, which is not rubber coated, but slippery smooth and plastic like. This is something I am not used to and we'll see if this affects me in any way.

Sorry to say, I invested so much effort into this I would never sell it ;)

It's interesting that you mention the "Benny Hill" involvement in those Benelli's. I was in his shop picking up my VMT that they modded and talked to the man who does the work. They had just gotten a shipment of 50 guns to mod and turn around.

The retail price of Triangle's package as they call it, is $895 for either the VM or Benelli. They do the same work on either make.

Because I started with a stock VMT out of the box, my cost was $400 as many of the parts were already in the box or on the gun. I stayed with the eight round magazine extension and use a +2 to bring my capacity to 10+1. Most of Benny's customers start with the 26" standard VM and add the "package" Benny charges $100 more for the Benelli M2 version. Many of the "better" competitors here in Corpus have one of Benny's guns.

I had the experience of being on the same squad as Benny for my first ever shotgun match. I had a great time, got some coaching from the master and the rest is history. Benny can still hold his own with the best shooters down here. He's magic with a shotgun.
