legality for use of .243 wildcat in S.O.

It would seem that the 270 Win. -which uses a 277 bullet - is over the "275" that is quoted as the law, so you had better go smaller than the 270 that several persons have mentioned.
.

This has been debated many times. A .270 Win cartridge is legal, that is all that matters. As said already, it's a regulation, it doesn't have to make sense.

I'm sure glad I don't have to live in Ontario......................

In the majority of management units where this caliber restriction exists there is no rifle hunt for big game so there really is no need for anything above a "coyote sized caliber" anyways. Head north to where rifle hunting is permitted (with a much lower population density) and there are no maximum caliber restrictions.

Oh please. Its only the southern part of the province where 90% of the population resides that the problem. The rest of us can use the same guns you use in YT. In fact the amount of land in Ontario not covered by the ridiculous "270 law" is roughly the size of the Yukon.

Just about as goofy as the Alberta law that says that the center fire cartridge must be 23 or larger. A 70 grain bullet at 3000FPS from a 22-250 or a 70 grain bullet at 3000 FPS from a 243 should have the same effect.

The 70 grain .224 cal projectile assuming a reasonably tough construction should actually penetrate better the a 70 grain projectile of an identical nature that .243 in diameter, but you are right. 60+ grain .224 cal projectile perform identically to 80-90 grain .243 cal projectiles at similar velocities. (sorry for the derail)

As far as the OP's purpose those sabot rounds perform poorly and I believe in my readings of some Ontario game laws are specified as also being prohibited, of course I may have that mixed up with NB's.

I hate to be the odd duck out here but I'm glad their is no rifle hunt down here, don't get me wrong I would love to use my rifle for deer down here. With seeing how some of these people spray slugs around I'm surprised noone has been hit with a stray yet.

Exactly. There are so many ding dong's out there who "hunt" for a maximum of 5 days per year as they only participate in the controlled hunt doing drives. A huge number of these people have no clue how to shoot accurately, hence the world war 3 amount of shots during the controlled hunt weeks. It's normal to hear a dozen or more shots from a small bush and then drive by or talk to the group of hunters to find out they didn't get one.

I can't help but think that a large number of people participating in the controlled hunts spend zero time shooting paper before the hunt. It's typically the same yahoo's who will attempt to shoot a deer at 100 yards with buckshot, often wounding the animal, and then go on and on about how buckshot is useless for deer. I've watched two guys unload on a doe that was at least 100 yards away with mud and water flying up all around her.

I'd stop participating in the controlled hunt around here if they allowed rifles to be used. Besides, using a shotgun w/ slugs around here is practically cheating and using a rifle would be easier than shooting fish in a barrel...
