Hey guys...

I have a side by side shotgun obsession.. but these guns are incredibly rare it seems... and all the side by sides I do find seem to be stupid expensive.. I don't understand... I can get a pretty sweet pump shotgun for 300bucks... but a side by side is $1000+?!

Does anyone know where I can find a descent 12gauge side by side? I'd like a 28"+ barrel... the cheapest I've seen is a CZ Bob White for $625... is that my only option??

Anything cheaper than that?

Preferably in BC!

Thank you;

I think Stoeger makes (or made) some versions of side by sides. I know some were shorter coach guns, but i think they did make full length ones as well.

Thank you - I'm checking into baikal and stoeger right now. What's Tradex though?

I just spoke w/ Baikal and they have rifles for $520 which seems like a good deal. What's the story on Baikal though?? Are they reliable rifles?

Look up at the top of the page. TradeEx is a sponsoring business. Many double guns at very reasonable prices.

In a new SxS I'd look at the CZ's.

In a used SxS my first choice would be an SKB-made Ithaca Model 100 or 200.

Tradex Guns are well used and usually show it, but there are some nice ones. Generally worth it, even if you might have to get the chokes opened depending on your needs. I'd look at the BRNO. I'm sure there are other good ones, I'm just not familiar with them.

If you are wondering why a lot of quality SxS's are expensive, then I'm afraid you don't understand the world of SxS's. Not trying to be condescending, just saying there is a lot that goes into the making of a decent, quality SxS. Yes, there are low cost budget guns that will go bang. It all depends on what you want out of a SxS. Do you want a utilitarian gun that is crude but shoots or do you want a light, well balanced, elegant upland gun. And yes, I have or have had SxS's from $300.00 on up to over $2000.00. And yes there is a difference. Just pointing out why a good quality double costs what they do. If the low cost SxS's suite your needs, by all means go for them.

I should point out I'm talking new or fairly new guns here. Personally, before I would buy new low price, I would be looking at used Brno's, Merkles, Sauer ,Simsons or Fegs just to name a few. I would pick these over most lower priced Spanish guns from the 60's or 70's. You might even find a few low priced used quality english guns.

Baikal, CZ, Yildiz all are leagues ahead of Stoeger in reliability and performance and all are reasonably priced. The simple truth is double guns take a great deal more finishing and hands on then a pump gun to get the same amount of reliability and that simply costs more.

Tradex has a good variety to choose from. Some have 2 1/2 " chambers so pay attention to that.

I purchased a very nice Hungarian FEG from Tradex for around 300. It works extremely well and is very tight. If you phone they will even suggest a good one for you.

I really appreciate all the feedback! Honestly!

The reality is I can't afford a really nice side by side! I'm all over the ones that cost 2k+... they are so elegant imo...

But, I've done some duck hunting with an old sxs that seriously was falling apart (every pull of the trigger you thought the barrel was going to fall off!)... but I loved that shotgun... it was great!

It looks like Tradeex might have exactly what I'm looking for (in fact they have it seems an endless supply of them!)...

I want a gun that can shoot a duck and some clay pigeons...

I honestly didn't realize so much went into the sxs rifles. I was also puzzled as to why stores tend to carry the O/U and rarely do you see a sxs. And when you do find a sxs it's got a 20" or shorter barrel which seems to target more cowboy action shooting...

A side question for those who have owned or shoot a sxs... are the exposed hammers a good or bad thing?

Thanks again to all your comments!

(Thank you bland & yyj200 for your input - I'll call them as well and see what they have to say)

If you're considering a used SxS, such as a Tradex gun, for waterfowling (steel shot), read the following thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...293-Affordable-Side-by-Side-for-Goose-Hunting

( Quote--A side question for those who have owned or shoot a sxs... are the exposed hammers a good or bad thing? )

Exposed hammers are a personal thing. I have a few SxS's with exposed hammers. They take a little bit of getting used to. Most external hammer guns are sidelock or back action locks. A lot of the times the locks are nicely engraved so this ,coupled with external hammers, can create an elegant SxS.

Fit is more important then hammered or hammer less. I can shoot both equally well. I prefer hammer less while hunting just for the fact there is less to tangle up on undergrowth. Hammer guns will eventually teach you how hard you can pull a trigger when you forget to #### th hammer lol
