Getting to know the Ruger 10/22

ruger 10/22 is a gateway drug.... i mean gun!

i find it funny in your last post when you changed your mind about the 10/22 and went with the 795 against the sound advice of the lads from the gun store, then in the very same post your looking for mags. that is the one good thing about 10/22's, everyone has stuff for them.

I know I signed up for a tough time finding mags, it really turned into a matter of how much I can afford to spend right now, including upgrades. The irony is not lost on me! 10/22 will definitely be in the future when I have more money but for now at least I can start sending some lead down range!

Those rugers are sweet though, thumbhole stock is so awesome. Those Pullpup conversions are so cool

and to answer a question from your original post about the thumbhole stocks for 10/22's;
yes, there are a bunch of them.
if your into Laminate ones you can go with Boyd stocks, nice and under $100.

2 examples of ones ive done.

im sure Boyd's makes the same for your gun so you may wanna go have a look at their website.

What is the barrel length including the break on the Boyds evolution stocked 10/22 ?

i think its 26 1/2" to the end of the thread.
you cant count the break into the measurement if your going for legal/not legal measurement.

and thats a 4" break, probably 1 1/2" of threading, so 28/29" ??

i can go measure it for you.
i need an excuse to wear off some supper, upstairs i go!

Hi and welcome, I've got a ss synthetic 10/22, all I've done is scope it. Would like to mod it but keep buying other stuff. The rifle is great with no problems right out of the box, had it for 10 years and only a hand full of jams. Mine likes blazers. I did get 2 25 round butler creek mags they snap together. Have fun, cheers. Oh just got the cz 22, beautiful rifle and very accurate.

Any benefit to a shorter barrel on these rifles?

just looks.
for 22's barrel length means nothing (or not much) when it comes to accuracy.
barrel quality is the most important, there are some tests out there comparing 22" barrels to 8" barrels and there is no marked difference in accuracy.
its only once you get into bigger rounds that barrel length starts to add to the accuracy.
so for 99% of us that shoot 22's the barrel length is just strictly lipstick and a matching purse.

A 10/22 could have gone years and been accurate and reliable enough for a beginner shooter without any mods done. Just because so many pimp theirs out, doesn't mean you have to. A ruger would have been a better gun from the beginning. Now I bet the only thing in your mind is 'shoulda, coulda, woulda' and that 795 will be for sale in no time

That makes sense. When I was into paintball the barrel lengths didn't make an enormous difference and were actually a detriment past 16"

This is really true but I know that if they can last that long then they'll still be around in a while when I can get another firearm. I'll see how things go, just wanted to get a cheap gun to get a baseline for my interest in the hobby. I was definitely a bit impatient but I'd rather just get shooting and worry about getting the "right" gun when I have more funds

Besides, GoodLife fitness is trying to murder my wallet right now. stupid gym contracts from a half a year ago haunting me.

Never becoming a member of a private gym again :bangHead:

The 795 is a nice gun. You won't regret it.

I'm also a beginner, but I went with the 10/22 (compact). I know there are more precise semi-auto out there and I hope to buy one someday. I chose the 10/22 because it has a long history and will keep it's value in case I want to sell it; it's the first gun in the family and needed something ultra-reliable and repairable because I expect that my wife, kids, nieces and nephews, brother-in-law and father-in-law will all want to shot it every time they come to the cottage; if I get tired of it I can turn "it into a tournament grade target shooter, nocturnal varmint hunter or even a tactical sniper rifle" (not my words-read it somewhere), and at the same time start practicing gunsmithing.

My 10/22 takedown is one of my favorite target guns. It's stock and all I added was a cheap bushnell scope with a butler banana mag.
It comes with a case that fits in youre backpack etc.
