Kinda looking at maybe getting a commander length 1911 in 9mm. But the only one that i think looks right is a colt combat commander. how rare are these?

thanks.

Not too rare at all. IMHO, the one to get is the Series 70 type.

Fished this one off the EE a few years back. S70 type. Colt Combat Commander 9mm.

Nice to know their not too rare. what would one in 9mm cost on average would you say?

That's the ticket, they're not going to be cheap. Anything Colt from that era, in nice shape, is getting a pretty good buck, these days.

By contrast, I just looked at a copy of the 1973 Guns & Ammo annual I have. MSRP on the Colt Combat Commander then was $134.95!

I picked up a used one that was on consignment a couple of years ago. The guy was asking $1000, I got it for $900. It has Novak 3 dot night sights, mag well, trigger, it is a Series 80 piece. Sadly the barrel and frame had been "worked" on, so in the end it needed a new ramped barrel installed. Gunnar at Armco took care of that. It also came with a broken ejector, so I replaced that. I was so happy to have found a 1911 Combat Commander in 9mm that I missed the flaws... It works like a charm now.

Did somebody say 9mm Commander?!

still wearing its tag from the store.

don't use it that much as i still fine 1911's awkward to clean. and well, it seems almost too nice to use.

it was built c 1951 and shows only slight wear on the grip.

I've only seen one for sale and I scooped it, the extra colt 9mm mags were harder to find then the pistol

With it's big sister

Nice looking family!

...I ended up getting Mecgar mags (from Marstar)... then was given a somewhat rusty one (at n/c) by Del Selins....

as i understand it the Commander was developed back in the 1940s when the US was considering going to the 9mm Nato standard. took a few decades before that actually happened, and in the meantime, some nice pistols for those who didn't worship only the .45 acp round.

I used to have one. Was a really nice little pistol. The main problem I had with it was that you MUST use good magazines. Crap mags will cause jamming. Had I known about Tripp Cobra mags back then, I'd probably still have the pistol.

I could not wait for a Colt Commander in 9mm, so I bought a Colt Competition in 9mm from Irunguns... I lucked out. All match tuned with flat MSH, skeletonized hammer, Novak sights. What's not to like?

Cheers
