Is corrosive ammo that bad?

I have been using the expensive n.c. ammo in my old sks and was thinking about switching to the cheap corrosive junk.
What are everyones thoughts?
 
Use BOILING water, and clean every part that gets exposed to the exhaust gases.
This means the gas piston and tube, not jsut the bore.
Ignore anyone that says "Just spray Windex down the bore." unless they offer a replacement guarantee.
 
All i run thru my vz 58's is corrosive ammo and vz rifle are alot more money then your sks. Like stated above, all i do is the boiling water treatment after each range trip. Never had a problem doing it this way.
 
I'd say there's no problem using corrosive ammo if you keep your guns stock (i.e. easy to field strip). I've modded a couple of my guns up and they're more time consuming to field strip now (i.e. I have to use a punch to get the BC Tac handguard off my 858 it's so tight), so I'm switching to non corrosive as soon as I use my corrosive up.

Meh. It depends a lot on where you live and the humidity. I live in southern Alberta, which is damned near a desert. I have used both windex and Hoppe's #9 and had no problems. I have also accidentally left a rifle sit for a couple of weeks after shooting corrosive ammo and had nothing more than very, very light surface corrosion in the gas system to deal with. The guys living on the coasts or in southern Ontario couldn't pull that trick without permanent damage to everything.

might be a bit more work to just clean the rifle after every use but IMO thats an excellent trade off for shooting on the cheap.
 
I have fired 2500 rounds so far without any problems. I just use hoppes#9 and sometimes just some metal cleaner from home depot. I have used boiling water, windex just depends what I have at home after the range. I have also not cleaned the thing for a couple weeks after use and the gun was still intact when I got there. Bottom line is, just shoot the damn thing and give it a couple patches of hoppes#9 and then get a new sks after you fire about 10 cases thru it which it will handle before finally she calls it quits. You will have a shot out barrel before corrosion sets in. No need to pour hot water down the barrel and windex and all that ####. Just a simple hoppes patch and some dry ones after. Be sure to clean the gas cylinder with hoppes
 
All Warsaw Pact armies were running it and still do and no soldier would get rust. Clean the gun after you shoot or at least once a day it will be fine use oil, this is why all sks come with big bottle for extra oil. Corrosive is no junk it is even more reliable then non-corrosive in cold weather

Have you ever forgotten to clean it for several days?
Is it ever going to stop snowing/raining here?

An XCR is not a throw away SKS if it rusts.

Use it all the time I use about three kettles worth down the bore while constantly using the brush in between pours, I run about a kettles worth through my gas system, and then I clean regularly with hoppes 9 or crud blaster, run till patches come out white, which takes awhile especially if you do not kettle it before. I then I oil everything with rem or hoppes oil. Everything looks the same maybe even better than when I bought it 800 rounds ago

Yes, I clean as soon as I'm in the door.
No, I've never forgotten. I started a routine and stick with it.
Yes, it will stop snowing. No, the rain won't stop, EVER...

When the gun was brand new, I had a hard time convincing myself that I was doing the right thing. The cost savings with x39 over .223 has just about paid for then gun. Now I know, I'm doing the right thing.

This brings up a good point.
It is not the actual Potassium Chloride alone that does the damage.
The KCl absorbs moisture from the air, then the water and KCl together cause the rust.
 
Never had a problem with corrosive ammo use followed by proper cleaning :) Its a good motivator for me to clean my guns after range time with them :evil:
 
Whether the following has any legs at all, I'll leave to those wiser than me, but..
I read on this very forum about some folks firing a few quality, non-corrosive rounds at the end of any session, to blast most of the not so nice corrosive residue away. It does make some sense to me, so although I still thoroughly clean within an hour every time, I keep good stuff and use it for this very purpose. Bottom line is it can't do any harm.

I've never had a FTF with the cheap corrosive stuff.
