Cleaning Rod in Barrel Causes Catastrophic .338 LM Kaboom!

That has happened many times in the past with other cartridges ... invariably an extraction problem that is ignored...

But part of the problem is building a .338 Lupua Magnum on a Savage or Remington or similar action that really has too small a barrel diameter for that case and too small of an action...

Those big performance cartridges deserve a bigger action and barrel and pressure can be run up considerably higher with no problem.

That's crazy! I had the exact same rifle with the exact same problem! I used to knock out those empty cases every 3-4 shots. I remembered to remove the rod though.

I have had loads of issues with the soft Hornady brass... got rid of all mine for RUAG, and when those wear out I will likely go Lapua. I am curious if that was part of the reason he had to use the cleaning rod at all to knock them out...

I used Lapua Brass in mine. Still wouldn't work. When I fired factory Ammo it worked flawlessly. Reloads were a PITA. For all I know It could be a bad die and not a bad chamber. But too many others have had this issue for it to be that.

I see this kind of thing and I get a pit in my stomach. This could have been far worse for the shooter and others around him. I bet the shooter doesn`t screw around with sticky handloads after this incident.

This ! Coming from someone who really knows what he is talking about.

I'm sorry what happened here? He used cleaning rod to do what? And the gun went off how?

Are you telling me he fired off a round without removing the cleaning rod? If so people are saying you see this often??? I'm confused, are people that irresponsible or am I missing something ? I would take away your pal for something that stupid.

The savage .338lm has issues with the brass sticking in the chamber, you use the cleaning rod to knock the case out of the chamber. He forgot to take the rod out and fired a round. What people see often is people using cleaning rods to knock the stuck case out of the chamber.

This is actually an issue that's been around for a while with Salvage .338 Lapuas. Some of it was apparently due to soft brass..although said brass worked fine in other brands of rifles....hmmmmm.
So all you do is jam a rod down the barrel and push it out all while preserving that precious crown and barrel.
So...keep an eye out for this so you're not taking a shrapnel shower.

Wow,thats a big round to be f#cking around with, amazing he didn't get hurt. I mean it's basically like setting off a hand grenade next to your face for crissake.
