Handgun import from South Africa

Anyone can get a PAl or RPAL . I got mine with a tourist visa when I virst came to Canada from SA

This is correct, you do not need to be a permanent resident here in Canada, residents of the USA are able to get them just as Canadian residents do.

If you intend to bring any firearms from South Africa make sure they are listed on your entry documentation listed as goods to follow. You want to ensure CBSA is aware they have arrived or will be coming. You could ship them when you come but they would be held by CBSA until you obtain your RPAL.

You could contact the Canadian Consulate or Embassy in your area and see if there is a means to challenge the RPAL test oversea's before you come to Canada. As you are an experienced firearms owner, reading the reference material and the just writing the test or challenging the test could get your RPAL prior to arrival. Then you would just ship your firearms and clear them when you arrive. Your goods would be shipped inbond to the bonded warehouse closest to your home if you did not clear them at the airport you arrive at. You will also require an authority to transport any restricted firearms from the CFC to your home and eventual permanent storage location.

Welcome to Canada.

Nope. You have to swap barrel first and then change the status from prohib to restricted. Make no sense i know.

Hmmm... Well I know that a barrel under 106mm is a prohibited device (just the barrel by itself) so you would need a license to possess one (which you can't get). So there's no chance of bringing a prohib barrel into Canada.

What about a barrel that is 106mm or longer? I believe a restricted length barrel is an unregulated device, correct? (We're talking just the barrel, no frame).

Do you have to show it to anyone? I thought you just phone a verifier and tell them what length the barrel is?

Hello Everybody

Wow, I must say that I allready feel welcome here! Thank you so much for all your replies and assistance! What a great group of people on this forum... thanks!

Hello Everybody

I know this thread old, but this is related. I have another question. And again, I apologise if this has been discussed before.

I am not really familiar with what is prohibited and what not yet - the Canadian classification system differs A LOT from the South African system, so I will need your help again. I am looking into purchasing a BXP smg (9mm). A friend of mine has one for sale at a steal of $200 with less than 50 shots fired and I would really like this toy! However, my PR on the FSW stream should come through within the next 2 years and I am hoping to bring this puppy along to Alberta. I am hoping that it is not prohibited and falls into the restricted category, but I understand UZI's are out of the question? Is the BXP also classified as Prohibited? It is semi-auto with a barrel length of around 8 inches. I know that I will have to make a plan with all those 30rd mags though... :-( I guess they need to be pinned before I pack them up.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge!

This website should help you regarding which firearms are classed as prohibited...

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-98-462/page-2.html#sched1

and this page is the firearms act, which should have even more info than you need.

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/F-11.6/

And there's the RCMP (Royal Cdn Mounted Police- police force that, to simplify, has jurisdiction where there aren't municipal or provincial forces, and seems to be responsible for most firearms issues) site
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/prohibited-prohibe-eng.htm

I thought the RCMP site used to have lists of firearms by classes, but I can't find it- the lists were under revision so maybe the decision was made to refer people to the criminal code.

Good luck- because based on some of your other posts, it sounded like you could sell some of your stuff in SA and buy it here for less $$$. Might be the easier way to go...

edit:

this seems to be an 'unofficial' summary-
