I'm hoping to pick some brains here to try and figure out what is wrong with my 870.

Recently while goose hunting, when I take my first shot and pull the pump back to eject the spent shell it gets stuck on the way out. The shell will be sticking out the side but the brass end is stuck in the ejection port. The shell is sitting perpendicular to the barrel.

What could be causing this issue? Is it something with the gun or the ammo I am using? I'm shooting Winchester Xpert Steel.

Any insight or advice would be much appreciated!

Your extractor spring could be weak preventing it from maintaining tension on the extracted cartridge to properly engage the ejector. The ejector could be weak and is not giving the base of the extracted cartridge the little boot it needs to orientate itself for ejection. Sometimes 3'' barrels are put on 2 3/4" receivers. just sayin. I don't know if your gun is an Express or Wingmaster or if it well used or new.

The more info the better. I would recommend taking the extractor out of the bolt and giving the extractor, it's spring and the plunger a good cleaning. Also clean the recess in the bolt. A combo of lube and dirt and a cold weather goose hunt could be the culprit. Ejectors are rarely out of turn so I would start with the extractor cleaning. Most times ejectors have visible bends and breaks if they are the issue.

Thank you, that is where I will start!

I cleaned everything out real good and just put a bit of oil on everything. I think it was a combination of too much oil and gunk that build up over time. Ill be taking it out in the next few days to see how it functions.

I will report back if there are still issues.

Thanks again for the help

Could be other things to consider...

1. Makes sure that the rails that hold the ejector is not broken, bent or damaged.
2. Is the brass rim on the shells too small for the extractor to grab onto?
3. Crimps on the shells too long? Try a shortened spent shell.
4. Is the ejection port machined too short?

4. Is the ejection port machined too short?

1. Nothing looks bent or broken, everything cycles smoothly

2. The shells are factory loads. I looked the brass over and they seem normal to me.

3. Ill have to try it with 2 3/4" shells

4. Is that a common problem with factory 870 express magnums?

Was the ejector recess quite fouled with dirt and oil? A quick way to check and see if you improved it is to try spent 3" cartridge. Loaded cartridges will often eject in spite of function problems. The heavy loaded end will naturally want to fall out of the gun. Do not do this function test with loaded ammo unless in safe area.

10,4 another satisfied 870 shooter. It will be interesting to see if it acts up in the cold weather while goose hunting. Try graphite or Remington Dri Lube instead of oil next time you service the extractor and bolt.
