I bought some CZ custom parts and they finally got here today. I have the s.s guide rod put in with the factory spring. I notice that the factory plastic one's O.D id larger, as in had to twist the spring to get it off the plastic rod. The s.s one just slips on with plenty of room to spare. ( I assume this is normal, but with the slide locked back the s.s rod dips and wiggles about, but seems to manually function fine )

The second question is I also picked up a new front sight. Taller by .5 mm and it has the smaller fibre. From what I have read i just need to drill out the old sight pin, slide the new one in, and drill from the left side of the gun into the sight pin hole so the new sight won't walk out? Just install the new pin and thats all????

I picked up some green and red fibre to try out, wow is the green bright!!!!
 
You don't need to drill out the front sight pin, just carefully tap it out with a punch. Mine came out from right to left.

Fit the new sight in the notch by tapping it back as far as it will go (I used a brass hammer so no damage). Then drill a hole in the new front sight from the left side and tap in a new pin.
 
you may need to run a small drill bit through the hole in the slide, AFTER fitting the new sight. Make sure you do it from the left side so the spinning of the drill pushes the sight towards the rear, if you do it from the other side you can end up with a loose front sight. Some front sights come with a small V cut in them, those ones you typically don't need to run the drill bit through after installation.

My sight is a CZ one, not Dawson, so it has no v. I assume the small sight pin is easy to tap out? ( slide in a vice should do? ) Now to find a small punch...........
 
I think the word you were looking for in your first post is "drift". It's a word used in machine shop lingo for punching something out of a hole or slot using a punch and hammer.

The pin is a small split roll pin. Just keep your finger on it or do the job with an open bag ready to catch the pin as it bursts free.

Holding the slide in a vise is always a good idea. Just clamp lightly and pad the jaws with some card stock that is about as thick as a cereal box stock to avoid the jaws of the vise marking the slide finish.
 
Super awesome, got the sight pin out, drifted the new one in (very tight) and just started to drill and immediate snapped the drill bit!!! Nice now have a piece stuck in there. F


Ok got the piece out.
I am not a newb with a drill, but any tips?

I've done the same thing, when it hits the front sight sometimes they break. You just need to go really slow. I actually use the old broken bit for drilling the sights now, it's got a mangled tip, but it doesn't catch like it did when new.

Slavex, thanks for making not feel so bad. I will get the bit sharpened in the garage tomorrow, but like you say, I will leave it somewhat dull and see if it helps. Just wondering when drilling, does the hole in the slide get deformed very badly?

I looked at some Dawson Precision videos, he files and sands (fits) the dovetail and sight.(1911) Is that needed? I did not, and the sight was tight, the factory one looked like it was just tapped in there as you could see that the coating was scraped off and not sanded down.
 
I didn't file or sand mine, sure they fit snug but they will fit. The drill bit I used was one I purchased from CZ Custom so its diameter is slightly smaller than the hole. Put mine in a drill press and slowly drilled out the sight.
 
I used the exact bit, but sadly have no drill press ........... Glad yours fit the same as mine, was kinda worried about damaging the dovetail.
 
Not a good thing to drill those without a good drill press to steady and drill straight!!! I had mine done by A.C. Douglas (gunsmith) in Saskatoon because I didn't have a drill press. Yes it's important to drill in the right direction so you walk it into the recess instead of out. Your larger front sight will then make your gun shoot lower :)

Hi, hope you are enjoying BC. So Craig did your Shadow then? I may have to phone him today maybe.


I chickened out. Just got back from AC Douglas, he drilled it out for me. Was easy with the drill press.

How long did you have to wait to get it in the mail? I placed an order back on Feb 5th and am still waiting. The last tracking update was leaving LA on FEb. 8th.
 
Shipped Feb 12th. Got it this Tues?

I have had 3 recent online orders. (1 Canadian) All were about 2 weeks or sooner. 1 new one from Budget Shooter is in the works. Tapped out now.
