Handgun of choice for target practice?

I sold my Glock 21...again lol....this time for a NIB Colt Government Model .45 Auto (01991) blue model. I love Colt 1911's and Glocks. But I needed a more suitable companion for my Beretta M9, and what better than a 1911.

Damn I miss my Glock 21...

Over penetration not good so 7 shot Remington pump with birdshot + cheap and easy to load and fire
Also other break in related protection ideas
- to give yourself some time for whatever - get a dog
- Door reinforcement plate (check local bylaws re "home fortification")
- find the time to take a good martial arts course and drag as many family members there as you can - the skills and mindset will stay with you long after you quit
And remember, anything you bring to the situation can be taken away and used against you

keep safe!

Legally a restricted firearm can only be used for sport shooting. Now a 8.5" DA shotgun with a slug is totally cool for home defence. Obviously exigent circumstances do exist, but avoid even more hassle and get a NR for home defence
It is illegal to load a restricted firearm outside an approved range. Not a good start to your HD scenario. Shotguns (other than 8.5" with slugs) are awesome.

.90acp

460 grains

that is all....

Google search bill c-26 (s.c. 2012 c.9) citizen's arrest and self defence act, defence of property.
Came into force March 11 2013
Cant give you more info than that...

A lot of the self defense laws were in place before the change.
The new bill just made self defense stronger.
From my knowledge, you still would need to defend yourself in court of law if you use firearm in self defense (depending on situation and location I guess)

Im curious if the leagal consequences would be different for self defence with restricted vs non restricted. ...all else being equal

None, however they have more avenues to prosecute you with if you chose to use a Restricted. Unsafe or improper storage likely being the first… just some food for thought.

Either home defense or a sidearm for a combat soldier in Afghanistan....there's only one choice.

Glock 21 3rd Gen sporting factory night sights and an M3X Tactical Illuminatot by Streamlight. 13 round hiccaps loaded with Hornady +P 230 gr JHP. ...that's 14 rounds of Potent .45 ACP in a relaible, accurate package.

I should've NEVER sold that package lol....crap. That is the Ultimate defense package. Minumun of 5 mags.....1 in the gun and 4 on the belt in two double mag carriers. 13-round mags of massive .45 ACP sluggers....simply wow.

I've owned the Glock 21 twice.....I'll probably buy it again.

Glock Perfection :)

Pinned to 10… sigh

Somewhere along the way this thread went from self defense to target practice. Smart move in Canada.
Premeditated self defense is just asking to be charged. Sure you can win, but never before you are emotionally and financially depleted.

For target practice on uninvited guest use whatever you shoot best. A miss with the most powerful caliber has zero stopping power (ie 90ACP)

Personally I like revolvers so that you can be accused of picking up and hiding the brass.

I'm not following your straw man stuff Shawn?

What's a straw man?

A strawman argument is where one side of the debate is unable to refute the position of the other so they attack the debater and not the position.

Lol is a definate sign that you are younger then me. Ha. ha. So what? It doesn't mean much in the end.

What does age have to do with anything?

Im curious if the leagal consequences would be different for self defence with restricted vs non restricted. ...all else being equal

As posted above no difference

Your way or nothing eh Shawn?

Hopefully I'll never be confronted with that situation.

I hope you wont either. But if you are I want you to win and as such base you decisions on fact and not TV BS

So... my question is, when you call in to provide your information for the transfer of a restricted firearm, you are asked for the purpose of that firearm. I guess there is a list of legitimate purposes for owning a restricted firearm, including target shooting, collection, perhaps occupational self defense, what else? Domestic self-defense?

There are only 4 reasons to own a restricted in Canada and number one is self defence:

Permitted purposes

28. A chief firearms officer may approve the transfer to an individual of a restricted firearm or a handgun referred to in subsection 12(6.1) (pre-December 1, 1998 handguns) only if the chief firearms officer is satisfied

(a) that the individual needs the restricted firearm or handgun
(i) to protect the life of that individual or of other individuals, or
(ii) for use in connection with his or her lawful profession or occupation; or

(b) that the purpose for which the individual wishes to acquire the restricted firearm or handgun is
(i) for use in target practice, or a target shooting competition, under conditions specified in an authorization to transport or under the auspices of a shooting club or shooting range that is approved under section 29, or
(ii) to form part of a gun collection of the individual, in the case of an individual who satisfies the criteria described in section 30.

Legally a restricted firearm can only be used for sport shooting

Nope, if you don't know what the law is please do post about it.

It is illegal to load a restricted firearm outside an approved range.

Same as above, but this time lets see the section of any act of parliament that says this. Because its not true.

Premeditated self defense is just asking to be charged. Sure you can win, but never before you are emotionally and financially depleted.

Really guys if you have no clue what your talking about don't post. First off there is no such thing as "premeditated self defense" secondly firearms are used every day all across Canada for defense. You have a better chance of winning the lottery then getting charged.

Shawn

No, that's ad hominem. A strawman argument is where you misrepresent the opponent's position to make it easier to attack.

Shawn, Is it reading or comprehension that you struggle with?

The answer to your question is once more in the post that you quoted...... you are younger then me "so what? it doesn't mean much in the end"

In other words even though you are my junior I will still show you respect..... until you show me that you don't deserve it.

Hey maybe you are older then me but more hip with your shortehand? Hard to tell really and like you say not that important to the subject at hand.

It seems to me that you don't respect others with different opinions then yourself. It might be nice that you've got it all figured out, but personally I enjoy the prospect of being wrong and learning from both my mistakes and experiences in life.
I also enjoy learning through other peoples experience.

Perhaps you could share the whole story of getting your teeth smashed in because of a long gun? Sounds like a good story!

Here's my high tech home defense weapon that both my wife and I have access to immediately and not locked up in a safe where you'll never get to it like a handgun. It's been ready since 1989 and still ain't been used for home defense, just varmint control and hunting partridge.

Lol, :)
Sounds like Shawn might be the straw man.
You are starting to take things personal. Shawn seems pretty level headed in his responses. Very informative I gotta say.

I have read some others refer too the mag fed shotguns as a good tool. But from my understanding, when you run out of ammo, you're screwed. Unless you have a bunch of mags of course. But who would with a shotgun? Whereas a simple pump with feedtube can be resupplied easily on the run. Just my .05 cents.
