I'm looking at picking up a .223 NR carbine, and I'd really like a T97. I like the features and I like the pricepoint. I'd like to keep it under $1000 for the rifle and there isn't a lot of options obviously, my only other choice would likely be a new Mini-14 (had an older series, love the feel of the gun, but mine was pre-ranch so it didn't have scope mounts and obviously the old pencil barrel). Use will be mostly plinking, though some short range varminting might happen from time to time. Definitely will be going with the FTU as well.

Problem is I'm left handed and left eye dominant.

I'm aware a few people have made shell deflectors to overcome this. I have no problem rigging something up to keep brass out of my face. I'm curious on how they handle for a lefty and some sort of deflector though. For anyone that has rigged something up, does it shoulder fine and can you get a decent sight picture/cheek weld? Essentially is it comfortable to shoot with a deflector or is it sort of just bearable?

I am not sure about the 97 but I have shot a tavor and unless you can convert it I don't think left hand shooting will be an option the tavor I shot also seemed to blow powder in my face it was done thing to get used to for sure!! I have a mini 14 and live it for plinkin

If your face is behind the ejection port, you should be fine because it spits them to the 2 o'clock with an upward angle. Sometimes they bounce off the inner roof first of the bench area. I guess it might be unnerving to have hot brass flying an inch from your mouth. The ARs need an external deflection plate but the T97 doesn't.

What I have done is I grip the pistol grip with my left hand but I shoulder it on my right shoulder that way it still ejects out the right side... it takes a bit to get used to but honestly I find myself more stable when I do it that way.

I have shot both the T97NSR and a right handed Tavor left handed.

I will say this: It can be done with relativly zero problems, and the odd casing that does end up hitting you does nothing more than get your attention, it isn't as bad as people make it out to be...

That said, it is important that you keep your shoulders and the rifle at a right angle from each other to avoid being clipped by the brass.

If I were you I would save the money and aim for a used Tavor. In the last week I have seen multiple tavors hit the ee pretty reasonable. One was 50rnds and asking $2400, one was 500rnds and asking $2200, another $2300 and another for $2400.

If you were planing on buying an NSR, and loading it up with the goods from T97.ca, you will be knocking on used Tavor's door.

Just purchased T97. Out of 50 rounds, only 2 touched my chin. And that was due to cheek weld too far forward. It's really a fun gun and shooting lefty is not a deal breaker.

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for responding to this thread. I ended up finding a t97 on EE and finally got around to shooting it yesterday. Shot it right handed just to verify the angle of ejection, felt pretty natural actually. Then switched back to lefty, no issues whatsoever, perfectly comfortable to shoot. I'm probably going to make up some sort of very minor deflector (more so just something to reference where the port is, rather than actually deflect spent brass) because I'm sure there will be a time that I get too close when shooting from different positions lol.
