.22 Amo in Ottawa area

So I know there have been several threads around .22 amo shortages all over the country. Yesterday I went on the hunt for .22 LR amo at 10 stores in the Ottawa area. What I found was very interesting. No shock the first 3 Walmarts I went to were out of stock, then followed by the next 3 Canadian Tire stores. Each place I went I heard the same thing from the people working in the sports department. "Someone came in and cleaned us out". When I got to the 6th store, same sort of message but with one difference. The sports section manager told me that folks from the US are coming up here and buying all the .22LR amo they can get their hands on due to the shortages down there. I'm not wanting to start a border battle, but my question was how can they purchase amo in Canada without a PAL? The silver lining to my story is I did manage to get my hands on some at one of the Walmarts, but sadly now they are out of stock as well ;)

I agree, but nothing stopping a PAL holder from buying some for him if you could find some in stock.
I was at a range in North Carolina last week and the talk there was about a real shortage of 22 ammo all across the US so I'm not surprised that it is effecting us as well.
 
So I called Canada customs (yes I was that bored) and someone from the US can apply at the border for a temp PAL for their duration of their trip to Canada, however that will only allow them to purchase amo, not bring it back with them. They would need an export license in order to bring it legally back to the US. Anyway, sucks there appears to be a shortage of .22 LR, hopefully there will be more coming soon.

So you're the guy who wiped out the stock at that WalMart???

Give up looking in any of the "city/suburban" stores, they seem to not be re-stocking lately. I think there was also a small recall from Winchester on the M-22 22lrs that may have scared some of the CT/WM or at least dropped their supply a little. Head out of town to the more rural stores, you might see more stock.

The Winchester 555 packs are usually out of stock and WalMart has adjusted the price to match the round price of the 333 packs so you may as well get those if that's what you want.
There're lots of 50 or 100 round boxes available around Brockville but not as cheap as the bulk stuff.

Seems to me it's Ontario that's out of bargain 22LR, guys out West and in the Maritimes seem to be OK.
 
Americans have been buying up ammo in the Ottawa area for some time now .223 and pistol ammo also. Will expect them at the Renfrew show this weekend.
 
Give the firearm counter at SAIL (at Trainyards) a call Monday each week...they get inventory sparsely, but last time I was there, I bought two 5,000 round boxes of Remington Yellow Jacket Hyper Velocity 33gr .22LR. They apparently never know what/when they're gonna get it, but it does come in; so gotta call and run to grab it asap.
 
I can relate. I have been after Federal .22 Magnum and no luck anywhere. I contacted the distributor who told me to contact Stittsville Range. They had none in stock so I suppose I am SOL!
 
I was out and about today....and I was shocked at the .22lr situation. Sail @ the Trainyards has a good supply of Remington Golden Bullets in the 525 value pack for $22.99 and The Hunting & Fishing Store has the Remington Thunderbolts for $26.99. Everyone else is either stuck with a few boxes of subsonic, CB's, or the Match grade stuff @ $35+ per brick. The city is pretty sparse. I came home with 1150rds of .22lr Golden bullet from Sail and a 250rd value box of Remington 115g 9mm UMC from Lebaron. Just figured I'd add a little more to my humble little hoard @ home.
 
I stopped in yesterday at walmart. Low and behold they had just gotten in some Winchester 333 boxes after about 5 months. They got in a whopping 10 boxes which will last all of 3 days once shooters know they have them.
 
just to add, A brick is going for 100 bux at the flea markets in the states, I just came back,, had to look twice at the price, and say Really guys...

So you really need 10,000 rounds of yellow jackets...no wonder I can't find a brick for bunnie hunting!

Anyhow, I bought two 50 round boxes at TLC in Kemptville for $5 each....
 
I've been stocking up too, and by the looks of things, it may be a dry summer if we don't. I really don't know what to believe when it comes to the .22lr supply, some say its drying up and some say its just panic buying in the U.S. I know myself that I've walked into stores in the Ottawa area and have been told that their suppliers are dry. I dunno....guess stocking up can't hurt. The prices will likely rise if nothing else. This time last year, all I had was a couple boxes of Whiz Bangs that I dug up in my Grandfathers basement and a half used box of CCI Minimags.......now I have enough .22lr to last me well into retirement. Maybe my grandchildren can glue them to construction paper like macaroni.
 
They had 2 boxes of the Win Dynapoints this morning at the CT at Centurm and I grabbed them, they also had a few boxes of Win 333 if anyone is looking for those. I use the CT website to check inventory regulary and it's usually pretty accurate. Anytime I see them in stock near me, I go buy.
 
there were a couple of Americans buying ammo at Renfrew gun show today. one fellow was drooling on the 1941 Johnson rifle there ,very badly.
