Hey Guys
I just picked up a Remg. VTR in .308, I really like this rifle and I plan on using it mainly for hunting (deer, bear, cotoyes) but I also want to have some fun with it shooting targets out to 400 yards with my buddies. Is there an all round bullet you would recommend for these applications. I will NOT be shooting competition with it, just some fun with the guys on the range and serious hunting.

Thanks

In my old rem 700 5r, the most accurate bullet was the nosler accubond, shot better then the 175smk. Putting it easily into the .3moa at 100.. Down side is they are about 2x the price of a straight target bullet

That's kinda the route I went, and I opted for Sierra Game Kings at 180gr for hunting and Sierra Match Kings at 175gr for target and precision. This way I could do just a fun day at the range or some serious hunting and target shooting without switching things up too much. However, that wasn't cheap and that's what got me into reloading :) At the rate I've had decent shots on deer in Ontario 40 SGK rounds will last me a lifetime :/

Your rifle will preferentially "tune" to a particular bullet weight. The expensive bonded and partition bullets are generally not the most accurate. Find the weight you like - you can use inexpensive flat base cup and core bullets (Sierra, Hornady) at the range, and premium bullets of the same weight for hunting (if you think that premium bullets will benefit your hunting) FWIW - I use the cup and core bullets for both applications.

I have great success with Berger 168 gr Match Hybrid Target # 30425

and there hunting 168 gr Match Grade Classic Hunter # 3057

With Varget powder

i have found the 150 swift scirroco to be outstanding. shoots very well and i love scirrocos for hunting. unlike a lot of premium bullets they come in boxes of 100 not 50.

i like the hornady 30 CAL .308 168 GR BTHP Match

Thats what I shoot.

As for hunting, any hornady hunting bullet...
30 CAL .308 165 GR INTERLOCK® BTSP works fine

The animal really is not going to tell the difference when hit with any hunting bullet....
seriously, you could argue all day about hunting bullets, but how many times have you seen an animal hit in a vital zone get up and walk away because of a hunting bullet brand argument?

Hrn 178gr Amax if you have a long throat.

Hrn 168gr BTHP.

All great bullets.. and then there are Sierras, Noslers, Bergers, etc.

Hrn are usually the least expensive and great for general plinking. Quite a bit now instock and coming in.

going to also get a new bullet - hrn 155gr BTHP w/ cann. Yep, spec is right and should be a great option for bolt and gas rifles.
